This is a memorial to the HMAS Sydney which was lost in WW2. 645 sailors lost there lives in Australia's biggest naval loss in a single engagement with the German Raider the Kormann which also sunk. It sits on the bottom of the ocean a few hundred kilometres away. There were no survivors from the Sydney and the mystery was not really resolved till 20 years ago when both wrecks were found. There were German survivors but there stories were not really taken into account till much later after the war.
Looking at the names there were many Tasmanians lost.

Coral Beach... amazing place..a must see if you can. Spent our time at the magnificent beaches, snorkeling on the Ningaloo reef and sailing around the bay. Don't have to dive to see the marine life... Just take a walk along the beach up to your knees and fish of all shapes, sizes and colours swim around you. Lily even mastered paddle boarding! 😎
