Bowan Park Poll Dorset Research Stud

Bowan Park research stud has been established with the aim of increasing knowledge of Poll Dorset genetics.

The flock is open to all APDA members and provides the opportunity to assess their flock genetics and benchmark them within the breed.

16 Sires - 350 lambs
- All born within 10 days
- All grown in one mob – same feed, same management
- All on-farm performance measured and monitored

Sounds interesting?
It’s genetics in action - describing the variation that occurs with different sire genetics.

Want to see the lambs and hear some of the results?
On Friday 29th August, we open the gates for you to see the lambs in their sire groups.

Lambs, lots of lambs!
2026 cohort are on the ground, and looking good!

We have great diversity in the sires this year including Top 5% ASBVs for WWT, PWWT, PEMD and IMF.
3 of the sires are top 1% for IMF, which makes premium eating quality a highlight for 2026.

Some massive growth genetics, amazing muscle and carcase shape, and a good balance of fat, sets us up for a really good benchmark of commercial lamb production traits.

Welcome to our first time stud participants!

Worth a listen if you are keen on learning more about the world of "Meat Science"!

Dr Peter McGilchrist gets right into the how and why of IMF and Shear Force measurements (and makes research sound like fun!) and the importance of these traits for the consumer eating experience.

SIRE NOMINATIONS now open for Bowan Park 2026

Interested in benchmarking your Poll Dorset genetics across all prime lamb production traits?

In the last 6 years we have measured the on-farm and on-hook performance of over 90 Poll Dorset sires.

All lambs bred and managed under the same environment, highlighting the genetic capacity of the sires - and showcasing genetics in action.

With the successful completion of the 2025 cohort of the Bowan Park Poll Dorset sires progeny trial, we are now opening up sire nominations for 2026.

The 2025 results have displayed the enormous value Poll Dorset genetics put into the prime lamb industry.

The growth rates have been exceptional, with consistently high levels of overall structural and carcase conformation, and some outstanding eating quality traits have been highlights. We look forward to sharing the final reports later in the year.

If you are interested in benchmarking your stud genetics, either nominate your sire https://www.bowanpark.com.au/2026-sire-nomination or contact us for more information.

Nominations close Fri 31st Oct.

Want to know what happens to the loin samples after they leave the chillers at Gundagai Lamb ?

They are taken back to the lab at UNE Agriculture Meat Science, where the team, lead by Dr Peter McGilchrist, analyse the chemical IMF%, shearforce tenderness, and measure loin muscle and fat.

Pete is also using our samples to try out some of the developing technologies. Our project may also help the industry advance in more ways than one!
