Sydney Sculpture School

Sydney Sculpture School If you need a fresh yet challenging hobby or passion take one of our Sydney based sculpture classes and discover your artistic side!

Sydney Sculpture School provides sculpture classes for complete beginners through to advanced sculptors, in a relaxed, friendly and encouraging environment. Students are free to work on their own choice of project at their own pace. Beginners are guided through a practical method which is designed to teach a reliable technique of building a three dimensional form and to build confidence before mov

ing onto more challenging projects. The idea is to make the process of creating a sculpture as easy as possible, rather than becoming overwhelming. Of course once you have the basics, there is a lifetime of improving and honing your skills. Although there are life models in all classes, students are free to explore figurative through to abstract and are encouraged to develop their own style, rather than creating clones of our teachers. All of our teachers are professional sculptors who have completed private and public commissions, as well as producing their own bodies of work. For the more advanced sculptors there are a number of areas for improving on your skill base. For those wishing to pursue figurative work, Sydney Sculpture School employs only the best professional models. The school also has it's own sculpture foundry and runs workshops on all aspects of the bronze process from mould making through to finishing and patination of the bronze. The main focus of the school is on modelling in mediums such as modelling clay or wax, but periodic workshops are arranged to enable students to explore other approaches such as carving etc and experts in each field are invited to run those workshops. Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced sculptor wishing to hone your skills and connect with other like minded people, Sydney Sculpture School has a friendly and encouraging group of teachers and students who are genuinely interested in helping you to explore and improve.

The completed doors and fixed panels for St Mary’s Cathedral Tonga. It has been a gruelling schedule to get this finished and the past few weeks were punishingly hot. The relief sculptures were a nice change but very time consuming. I learned a lot on this project and if ever I make another door, it will be done differently. We had to develop a method for casting large flat pieces with a thin wall section. It worked well but it was a lot of extra work. I will post more photos shortly

A blast from the past! We recently did some maintenance in the Hunter Valley, on a memorial for miners who have died in Northern District coal mines.
I sculpted the portrait of Jim Commerford and the superb relief sculptures were done by Carl Merten and Joan Relke.
The 1,800 or so names of those who have died are inscribed in granite, with the youngest being 11 years and the oldest 80 years.
I personally knew one of those on the wall, who lost his life at 25 after leaving his job in town for an opportunity to better provide for his family. He had a young daughter and a son on the way when a portion of the mine roof fell on him.
After leaving school I spent 12 years in the mines as a fitter and picked up some invaluable skills for what I do now, as well as some character building experiences.
Mining is a dangerous industry and injuries go with the territory. I had my share and a score of near misses. My uncle worked at the same mine. He survived being buried alive in a cave in, but sustained life long injuries and probably PTSD, but PTSD wasn’t really a thing 30 years ago. I wouldn’t set foot in a hole in the ground now for any amount of money 😂
