🌿 Rangers Visit Our Preschool!

Last week we were lucky enough to welcome Rangers Shell and Sandy from National Parks for not one but two incredible incursion sessions - and our children (and educators!) were blown away.

The session explored different animal families - birds, reptiles, fish and mammals - with loads of hands-on activities, games, and things to investigate and wonder about. The kind of learning that sticks.

But the whales? The whales absolutely stole the show.

Did you know a fully grown humpback whale is as big as 11 elephants? Or that it needs to eat the equivalent of a whole bus-load of tiny krill every single day? Our children certainly know now!

One of the highlights was measuring out the full length of a humpback whale with an 18-metre tape measure - and then having the children hold hands and spread out to experience just how enormous that really is. Eighteen metres. In our space. It was quite the moment.

Thank you so much to Shell and Sandy for giving our children such an incredible experience. We are already looking at having them join us on our regular Bush Beach excursion - we cannot wait!

Our preschool teachers and educators deserve fair pay for the incredibly important work they do. Investing in them means investing in our children and the future of our communities.
It’s time for the NSW Government to fund preschools fairly and deliver the pay rises recommended by the Fair Work Commission.
Families can also help advocate for change — share this message, speak with our local MP Mark Speakman, contact the NSW Government Prue Car MP ,and let decision-makers know that fair pay and properly funded preschools matter to our children, educators and communities.

The NSW government must stop stalling and reveal how it will boost funding for fair pay in community preschools.

More than 170 IEU members passed a motion on 6 August calling on the NSW government to implement the Fair Work Commission’s recommendation that it increase funding for community preschools.

This would support pay rises for teachers and educators who are paid substantially less than their counterparts in primary schools.

It’s time for the NSW government to provide more funding for fair pay so our members can continue to offer safe, high-quality education.

This week is National Science Week, and at Cronulla Preschool we're celebrating with some seriously fun experiments.

Our little scientists are exploring:

🤖 Bee Bots - our programmable robot friends that teach directionality and early coding skills (we've never had to tell a child how they work - they figure it out every time)

🎢 Roller coaster tracks - testing momentum, speed, and how a ball can still climb back up a hill if it's moving fast enough

🧲 Magnets - discovering attraction, repulsion, and the invisible forces all around us

🔬 Microscopes connected to an iPad - so everyone can see the world up close in incredible detail

At Cronulla Preschool, we use the scientific terminology and the language of science with our children - words like hypothesis, momentum, and experiment - because this supports their language development and deepens children's understanding and knowledge too. Just like how every child learned to say "sanitise" almost overnight - give children the right language, and they'll use it.

This year's National Science Week theme is "Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All." That's exactly what we do every day. Science isn't something that happens in a lab. It happens in every "I wonder why..." moment at preschool.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘆𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵?!

And we have a very exciting local connection to share!

After being locally extinct for more than 50 years, platypus were reintroduced to Royal National Park in 2023. Since then they've not only survived - they've bred. There are now 20 platypus living in the park, and visitors are regularly spotting them in the wild.

Head down to Audley Weir and keep your eyes on the water - August is actually one of the best times to catch a glimpse, as platypus are more active foraging and out and about this time of year.

For our little ones, spotting a platypus in the wild is exactly the kind of nature experience that sparks a lifelong love of the natural world. 💚

𝗪𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲! 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹

As part of Education Week, our Cronulla Preschool children have been invited to join the Book Parade at Cronulla South Public School today!

It's a wonderful chance for our little ones to visit the school, take in the atmosphere and join in the fun of the parade. For many of our children, experiences like this are some of their first glimpses of school life - and they're magic.

The parade is open to the broader community, so families are welcome to come along too. Come dressed up, come ready to celebrate books, and come ready to have a great time.

Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day - a day to celebrate the strength, culture and potential of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across Australia.

This year's theme is Living Our Truth - honouring the power of truth-telling, the sharing of knowledge across generations, and the importance of telling our stories.

Respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and peoples is something we embed in our programme every day at Cronulla Preschool - not just on days like today. But these days give us a chance to highlight it further, and to reflect on what it means to truly listen to children.

For us, that's one of the most important things an early childhood service can do - make sure the voices of children are heard. Not just within our walls, but in the broader community too.

This Sunday (9 August) is also the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples - another moment to recognise and celebrate the strength and resilience of First Nations peoples around the world.

𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 🦷

This week is Dental Health Week (3-9 August) and at Cronulla Preschool we're making oral health a fun part of our programme - through stories, activities and conversations with our children about why looking after our teeth matters from an early age.

Good dental habits really do start young. Brushing twice a day, eating well and visiting the dentist regularly are all habits that, once established early, tend to stick for life.

It's a great week to talk to your little ones about their teeth - and maybe let them pick their own toothbrush!

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌿

Yesterday was World Ranger Day - a moment to celebrate the people who protect and care for our natural world, including those looking after some beautiful spaces right on our doorstep.

Kamay Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell and Royal National Park at Bundeena are places our families know well, and both rely on the dedication of paid and volunteer rangers who show up every day to keep these places thriving.

At Cronulla Preschool, getting outside and connecting with nature is central to how our children learn and grow - and it's only possible because spaces like these are so beautifully cared for.

If you have kids aged 6-12, the Junior Ranger program at Royal National Park is a fantastic school holidays activity worth bookmarking - park rangers lead a morning of nature-inspired craft and environmental learning at Audley. The next session is 30 September.

📚 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲!

Our Scholastic Book Fair is on this week - and this year there's a very special Cronulla Preschool connection!

One of the titles on display is Let's Go Racing! by Jessica Yates - and Jess is a former Cronulla Preschool parent!

Her son Samuel attended Cronulla Preschool, and it was his love of all things motorsport that inspired the book.
