CMCA SEM image wins 2022 JEOL Image Competition
Our new cryo-SEM produced this stunning image of blue cheese penicillium and won the competition for the month of February in 2022. JEOL applications scientists in the USA have now awarded this image the Grand Prize for 2022!

Materials research dedicated CT scanner is first of its kind in WA
Researchers will be able to gain new insights into everything from medical specimens to geological samples, fossils and artworks after a new 4200kg computed tomography (CT) scanner was delivered to the National Imaging Facility node at The University of Western Australia.

Cryo-Electron Microscopy Suite Launch
Was officiated on Monday the 30th of August by the Honourable Roger Cook (Deputy Premier of WA), Dr Katrina Stratton (MLA Nedlands), Debra Cousins (Exec Dir Sci Innov JSTI) and UWA Vice-Chancellor Amit Chakma.
This federal, state and UWA funded equipment comprises 3 JEOL microscopes and a range of sample preparation systems from Leica Biosystems and will be used to tackle a wide range of research in areas such as agriculture, biotechnology, climate change and advanced materials.

More images from the JEOL Cryo-SEM. No, the spikey balls are nothing sinister. These are pollen from the hibiscus flower shown below. The other spikey image shows the surface of the hibiscus stigma (the red areas below the yellow pollen in the image). Again, these samples are imaged in their frozen state.

Next instalment of the Cryo Suite at CMCA. The JEOL F200 TEM (HR) and JEOL F200 TEM (Cryo). The unexpected quarantine of Jeremy the JEOL engineer meant that delivery had to be supervised via tablet!
