This post is part of our school’s inclusion series, helping families understand the diverse ways students learn and participate.
Executive functioning skills help students plan, organise, remember instructions, manage time, control impulses and think flexibly.
Some students may need support to:
- start tasks
- follow instructions
- manage time
- organise materials
- cope with change
- stay focused
- remember what comes next
- manage emotions when demands feel hard
These skills can become harder when a student is tired, stressed, dysregulated or unwell.
At Barton, we support executive functioning through visual timetables, now/next boards, checklists, processing time, sentence starters, word banks, movement breaks, fidgets, chunked instructions and clear routines. These supports help students understand expectations, reduce overload and participate more independently.
Executive functioning support helps students manage the steps, not just the task.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation.
To help include all families in these important conversations, Reconciliation Australia has translated resources available in many languages, including Arabic, Assyrian, Chinese, Greek, Hazaragi, Italian, Khmer, Korean, Punjabi, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.
Families can access posters, information sheets and colouring-in pages here: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week/translated-resources/
We encourage families to explore these resources together and continue the conversation at home.

Today we acknowledge National Sorry Day and prepare for National Reconciliation Week commencing tomorrow.
This day recognises the Stolen Generations - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities, and cultures under past government policies.
We acknowledge the profound and ongoing impact this has had on individuals, families, and communities, and we recognise the strength, resilience, and leadership of Stolen Generations survivors.
At Barton Primary, we are committed to:
- Learning about and acknowledging the truth of Australia’s history
- Listening to and respecting First Nations voices and perspectives
- Creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment for all students
- Supporting understanding, empathy, and respectful relationships within our community
Sorry Day is not only about acknowledging the past. It is also about recognising the ongoing impact of these events and supporting healing, respect, and reconciliation into the future.
