🛡️ Year 8A History – Creating Their Own Heraldry 🏰

Today, Year 8A History students got creative designing their very own heraldic crests!

Taking inspiration from their own family history or drawing ideas from the past, students digitally designed their crests, sourced Latin for their mottos and laminated their final creations. ✨

A fun and creative way to bring history to life and finish off a Friday at Cowra High School! 📚🛡️

🎨 Stage 5 Visual Arts 🌸🏺

Our Stage 5 Visual Arts students are busy finalising their ceramic sculptures inspired by gardens. 🌿🌷

Throughout the unit, students have explored the works of Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keeffe 🖼️, as well as famous garden styles and landscapes, including Persian gardens, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Baroque gardens. 🌺🌳

Students have drawn inspiration from these artists and gardens to develop their own unique ideas and bring their individual ceramic creations to life. 🎨🏺✨

Over the past two weeks, Stage 3 Aboriginal students from Mulyan Public School and Cowra Public School have been visiting Cowra High School as part of our ongoing transition program. 🌟

Our visitors have had plenty of opportunities to get involved in high school life! One group joined an Ancient History lesson, where they had great fun mummifying our Year 11 students, writing their names in hieroglyphics and learning some interesting facts about Ancient Egypt. 🏺

An earlier group was mentored by our Year 11 Aboriginal Studies students, taking on a teamwork challenge to build the tallest tower possible using only skewers and marshmallows. Another group joined our Stage 5 PASS students for an afternoon of ball games and activities. 🏐

Of course, there has also been plenty of time in between for pizzas, treats and getting to know each other! 🍕😊

It has been fantastic to see our CHS student mentors growing in confidence and leadership with each visit, while our Stage 3 students are becoming increasingly comfortable, involved and confident around the high school environment. 👏

We look forward to continuing to build these connections throughout the transition program! 🌱

Aquatic Technology

Today the Stage 5 elective Aquatic Technology class tested out their fishing 🎣 skills at Second Sands on the Lachlan River. Students were able to practice baiting a hook, casting and for some students they learnt how to unsnag their lines! Thank you to SLSO Adam, Miss Langham, Miss Barrett and Mr Eastwood for their assistance today.

📚 Read With Me Program 🖤💛❤️

Some of our Year 8 students recently visited Yalbilinga Boori Day Care Centre as part of the Read With Me program with Beatrice Murray. 📖✨ Accompanied by Miss Langham and Dean Murray, students enjoyed reading with the children and building connections within our local community. 🫶🏽

A big thank you to Yalbilinga and Beatrice Murray for welcoming our students and supporting this wonderful program! We look forward to continuing the Read With Me program next term and strengthening these connections. 🌟

A dedicated group of Year 12 students are in at school today, working with Miss Putland as they continue to prepare for their upcoming HSC Trials.

🌟 Inclusive Education – Learning Beyond the Classroom

On Monday of Week 4, students from our Inclusive Education Faculty travelled to Young to visit Omnia – Inclusive Employment Solutions.

During the visit, students took part in the Mini Woolies activity, a simulated workplace experience that gave them the opportunity to practise real-world skills including money handling, customer service, inventory management and point-of-sale technology.

Our students embraced the experience with enthusiasm and confidence, showing a wonderful willingness to step outside their comfort zones and try something new. It was fantastic to see them developing practical workplace skills while engaging so positively with the activity.

A huge thank you to the team at Omnia Young for welcoming our students and providing such a valuable experience, helping them build a greater understanding of workplace skills and expectations.

Thank you also to the Cowra High School staff who joined the excursion and supported and encouraged our students throughout the day.

And finally, a special thank you to Tayler, our Job Coach, for organising this wonderful excursion and creating such a meaningful learning opportunity for our students.

🌱🔬 National Science Week | Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All 🌊

As part of our National Science Week celebrations, students had an exciting opportunity to join a live Zoom link-up with a CSIRO research vessel travelling through the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef.

Students were taken on a virtual tour of the ship and learned about the research being conducted on board. They also got to see some of the fascinating organisms collected from the ocean floor in an area that had never been mapped before!

The researchers demonstrated how they collect and analyse data as part of a global project to map the seafloor, giving students a great insight into science and research in action.

A fantastic National Science Week experience, bringing science beyond the classroom and connecting our students with real-world research! 🌏🔬

🤸 Backflips Against Bullying

Last Friday, our Stage 4 and Stage 5 students took part in Backflips Against Bullying – a high-energy presentation combining parkour, acrobatics and plenty of audience participation, all while delivering some important messages about bullying.

Students were actively involved throughout the presentation, from acting out bullying scenarios and exploring different forms of bullying, to the slightly more adventurous role of becoming human crash mats!

Behind all the action were some important messages. Students explored cyberbullying, exclusion and isolation, the impact these behaviours can have on others, and the role we can all play in being an upstander rather than a bystander.

A fun and engaging way to reinforce an important message – look out for others, speak up and take a stand against bullying.
