There was no template to follow, no “right” way to create and no expectation of a finished product.

Instead, children explored a rich invitation filled with natural materials, paint pens, tape, ribbons, sticks and open-ended resources. They wrapped, drew, layered, connected, experimented and revisited their ideas in ways that were meaningful to them.

As children create freely, they are developing far more than artistic skills. They are strengthening fine motor muscles, experimenting with cause and effect, solving problems, making decisions, expressing ideas and building confidence in their own thinking.

At Play & Learn, we value the creative process over the finished product because we know that some of the most meaningful learning happens in the moments of exploration, curiosity and discovery.

Sometimes the most beautiful creations are the ones that cannot be planned. ✨🌈

Last week our team had the privilege of attending NAIDOC for Jarjumms, hosted by NAIDOC for Jajumms - OurNangara

Every year, this special event brings together children, families, educators, Elders and community to celebrate culture, share knowledge and strengthen connections. It is always an inspiring reminder of the power of coming together to learn from one another.

One of the highlights of the day was witnessing the launch of The Nurtured Mind Approach , a wellbeing framework that places children’s wellbeing at the heart of everyday practice. Rather than offering another program to implement, it invites educators to reflect on the relationships, environments, rhythms and experiences that shape how children feel, connect and thrive.

These ideas deeply resonate with our philosophy at Play and Learn Vincent Street.

We believe children learn best when they feel safe, connected and valued. Through authentic relationships, meaningful time outdoors, connection to Country, child-led learning and thoughtful environments, we intentionally create the conditions for children to develop a strong sense of wellbeing, belonging and identity.

A heartfelt thank you to Our Nangara for creating such a welcoming and meaningful event, and for the generosity in sharing knowledge, stories and culture with our community. We are grateful to continue learning alongside passionate educators, Elders and families as we work together to nurture respectful, connected and confident children.

Thank you for another unforgettable NAIDOC for Jarjumms. We look forward to continuing these conversations and carrying this learning into our everyday practice.

Because when wellbeing is at the centre, children don’t just learn, they flourish.

At Play and Learn, our connection to Country is embedded within our everyday practice. Throughout the year, children are invited to build relationships with the land, with one another, and with the rich histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

During NAIDOC Week, we intentionally reflected on 50 Years Deadly, revisiting historical moments, exploring symbols and stories, engaging with natural materials, and creating spaces for curiosity, conversation and connection.

As we continue our journey together, we remain committed to nurturing respect, belonging and a deep appreciation for the world’s oldest continuing cultures.

A week of listening, learning, truth-telling and connecting to Country.

Through meaningful experiences, conversations and shared moments together, the children explored the cultures, histories and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, helping to build a future grounded in respect, understanding and belonging.

The outdoor environment was alive with conversation, imagination and collaboration the last week as the children transformed the space through their own ideas and creativity.

Using tubing woven through the trees, the children created their very own telephone system beside the mud kitchen, eagerly calling to one another, asking questions and waiting in excitement for their friends to respond. Nearby, children sourced dirt, water and containers to create a green slimy stew, negotiating roles and responsibilities as they became deeply immersed in their play.

Throughout the morning, the children moved through the environment with a strong sense of belonging and agency, problem solving together, sharing ideas and entering a beautiful state of flow.

Moments like these remind us of the power of open-ended environments and uninterrupted play, where imagination, connection and relationships can truly flourish.

This morning the rain transformed parts of our outdoor playground into a beautiful natural invitation for play and exploration.

The children were immediately drawn to the muddy puddles, exploring them with their whole bodies and all of their senses. With bare feet planted into the earth, children stepped through the mud splashing, jumping and experimenting with their own thoughts and ideas.

Together, the children created, negotiated spaces with one another, transported water and mud, drove vehicles through the puddles and discovered the feeling of wet earth between their fingers and toes.

These moments of open ended play allow children to connect deeply with the natural environment while developing confidence, problem solving skills, collaboration and a strong sense of agency within their outdoor classroom.

Sometimes the most meaningful learning experiences are the ones nature creates for us. 🤎

Through our recent reflections on ANZAC Day, the children came together to create a space of remembrance within our community.

With care and intention, they explored the significance of the poppy, engaging in the language of art as a way to express their thinking and connection to the stories we hold.

Positioned at the front of our service, this collaborative display invites our wider community to pause, reflect, and remember.

This garden has always been a meaningful part of our day 🌿

It is a space where children have ownership, caring for what they grow, making decisions, and advocating for their rights within the environment.

Together, we harvest, prepare, and share what the garden provides, connecting children to the full journey of food.

We were honoured to welcome back Uncle Allan into our learning community this week, sharing his knowledge of bush tucker, native plants, and his cultural knowledge and practices.

Through a slow, rich and meaningful exploration, the children engaged with the textures, scents, and stories of bush tucker and traditional bush medicines, building an understanding that the land holds knowledge, healing, and connection.

The sound of the didgeridoo invited wonder and investigation, as children explored how breath and movement create vibration and sound.

A thoughtful question from one child “Why do we call you Uncle Allan?” opened space for meaningful conversations about respect, relationships, and the sharing of knowledge across generations.

This experience was grounded in connection, to culture, to community, and to Country, reminding us of the importance of slowing down, listening, and learning with the natural world. 💛

We thank Uncle Allan for sharing his time, knowledge, and stories with us.
