In ancient Egypt, fourteen was the age of return.
Children born to the god and the goddess were taken into the villages outside the temples and the cities to be raised by the guardian archetypes of the community, the mother and father energies of the village itself, until they were ready. They were given food, water, shelter, companionship, and the co-creative nourishment of community life during the primary years of psychological and mental development. Not as abandonment. As preparation.
At fourteen, they returned to the temple. To the mystery school. To the rights of passage that would move them from child into adult, from community member into individual soul, from one who was held into one who could hold.
The brain at fourteen begins to identify itself as separate from the community, separate from the mother and father archetypes, separate from the collective it was raised within. This is not rebellion. This is the first movement of the soul toward its own authentic essence. In Egyptian temple life, this movement was held, guided, and celebrated through sacred ritual, devotional practice, and the cultivation of the individual's unique gifts in service of God.
We lost this. And the cost of that loss is visible everywhere.
What is occurring in our present day is many young women who cannot wait until their thirties or forties to find themselves. They are moving through dark nights of the soul, through conflicting and contrasting family dynamics, through psychological and mental health challenges, through anxiety, depression, self harm, substance use, homelessness, and the deconstruction of every environmental control placed around them. They are doing it without guidance. Without ceremony. Without anyone who understands what is actually happening and can hold the container for it.
My own daughter came back to me just before fourteen. She had already started early. She was more mature than her years and she was not willing to wait. I watched her begin to move through the very stages I am about to name, and I recognised them because I had walked them myself, just three decades later than she was.
I did not complete my own rights of passage until I was thirty three. I walked through mine the hard way, when relationships broke down, when the body collapsed, when nothing in the life I had built was sustainable anymore. I found the temple after the burning. Many women do.
For those women, I created the Purity of Isis Mystery School. Because the adult version of this journey carries more complexity, more calcified identity, less natural malleability, and more of life built on top of what was never completed. It is no different in its essence to what a teenage girl moves through. It just looks different in the modern adult expression. A woman leaving her marriage to find herself, a woman in spiritual crisis at forty, a woman dismantling her entire life to remember who she is underneath it, she is walking the same rights of passage. She did not get to walk them at fourteen, and so she walks them now. The Purity of Isis exists so that she does not have to leave her family, her life, or her community to do it. The container comes to her.
⠀
But this post is for the daughters.
And for the mothers and fathers who are watching their daughters begin this and do not yet know what they are seeing.
These are the seven stages of the rights of passage into womanhood.
⠀
→ STAGE ONE — PATRIARCHAL PUSHBACK
The first movement is always against the structure. Against the father energy, the school system, the authority of the legal system, the rules of the home, the expectations of the community. This is not defiance for its own sake. This is the rising of the feminine presence pushing back against everything that has controlled and defined her so she can begin to find what is actually hers. It is necessary. It cannot be bypassed. The woman she is becoming requires the friction of this stage to separate from what was placed on her and discover what is true.
→ STAGE TWO — LEAVING THE HOME
This looks different for every girl. For some it is choosing one parent over the other when the home is split, moving toward the parent whose environment supports her soul development. For others it is ending up at a friend's house, in residential care, with a youth worker, or on the streets. The form it takes matters less than what it represents. She is leaving the community confinements of who she has been told she is and who she should be. She is removing herself from the environment that cannot hold who she is becoming. In ancient Egypt this was the village. In our modern day it is whatever she can find.
→ STAGE THREE — HEARTBREAK
The heartbreak of this stage comes from the loss of stability, the loss of guardianship, the loss of connection. It carries the feeling of abandonment, of neglect, of being left to navigate alone. It is accompanied by being misunderstood, being accused of things she is not, being made into a version of herself that does not match what she knows herself to be. The heartbreak is also the grief of misidentification. In Egyptian temple life, the rites of this stage were oriented toward helping the child find who she is. In our modern day, the projection of who she should be is placed on her instead, and the heartbreak is partly the weight of that projection.
→ STAGE FOUR — ILLUMINATING THE GIFTS
After the heartbreak begins to heal and the self connection starts to return, the gifts come back online. The hobbies, the interests, the creative pathways, the talents that carry her devotion and discipline. This stage looks like finding a job, beginning a traineeship, being supported and assisted in the mastery of a self-creative practice. Her light returns. She starts to understand what she is here to do and what she is genuinely capable of. This is the cultivation of the individual essence that the temple was always designed to draw out.
→ STAGE FIVE — RETURN TO THE SOURCE
Having found herself, having cultivated her individuality, her gifts, her direction, she returns. Back to community, family, home, peers, the environments she had to leave to find herself. The return is necessary for everything she has discovered to be anchored and understood in the broader context of her life. This is where families have the opportunity for reconciliation, to receive not the child who left but the young woman who has returned. The one who left needed to leave. The one who returns does not need to be what she was before.
→ STAGE SIX — LEADERSHIP
Leadership becomes available when the young woman is integrated enough to hold what she has walked through and offer it back. She shares her unique message, her pathway of creation, her gifts and abilities with those who hold similar energies and are one step behind her in the journey. She supports by leading and providing to those in the next generation below her in the natural hierarchy of consciousness. Leadership at this stage is not performance or position. It is the natural overflow of a developed woman who knows what it has taken to become stable, secure, and self identified.
→ STAGE SEVEN — GUIDE
The guide is different to the leader. The guide no longer needs to teach, to speak the word, to educate or take people through process. The guide simply is. The guide is the stabilised, fully authentic, created individual, solid enough in her integration that her energy itself becomes the field. She is then ready to be wife, mother and caretaker in full woman hood as she knows how to be herself in all of life. By being her human, fully and without apology, she guides men, women, children, and her entire community through the pathway of authenticity and free expression. She does not have to do anything. Others find their true nature in her presence because her field has become the transmission.
Stage seven represents a full cycle completion. The girl who was taken to the village has become the woman who creates her village.
Every individual is a unique expression of God, like a snowflake, and yet the rights of passage for our young women to step into their full embodiment as grounded, sovereign women require these seven stages.
If you are a mother or a father seeing this in your daughter right now, controlling, dictating, forcing, or coddling will not help her become a healthy, happy, unique individual. What she needs is someone who understands what she is moving through and can hold the container for it without making it wrong.
If you are a woman reading this who recognises that you never got to walk these stages at fourteen, that you are walking them now in your thirties or forties or beyond, you are not behind. You are on time for your own rights of passage. That path exists for you too.
What myself & other matured woman are about to create is a conscious initiation pathway for young women, a held, guided, ceremonial container for the stages of this journey that our current society does not know how to provide. If you feel called, if you see your daughter in these words, or if you see yourself, comment below to be informed of what is coming.
