Fishermen at Meningie are very fortunate to have the SA Seafood Express truck call in on its way back from Melbourne twice a week.
This way the fish gets picked up And transported to Adelaide. Normally a 4-Hour round trip, it saves wear and tear on vehicles and buys us back the time to do other things such as making new nets, catching more fish or doing maintenance work.
Or even more valuable...family time.
People don't always value their time and think they are saving money by driving their own fish down. Sometimes it's unavoidable and sometimes there might be other activities to do while down in Adelaide, However time is money.

So we thank Riki Mezic and the guys at SA Seafood Express and the service they provide to the South Australian Seafood industry And in particular the Lakes and Coorong Fishery .Running our businesses would be a lot harder without them.

South Australia has confirmed its first detection of H5 bird flu in a Southern Giant Petrel at Knights Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Southern Giant Petrel is a migratory seabird that breeds in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands between October and March. During the southern winter, these birds migrate north and can travel significant distances, including to the waters off South Australia.

Importantly, this is currently being treated as an isolated incident, and there are no detections in poultry anywhere in Australia at this time.

Avian influenza (bird flu) is a virus that can cause serious illness and death in poultry, wild birds and some mammals.

It’s important to stay alert to help protect SA from H5 bird flu.

If you see sick or dead birds or other animals, do not touch them. Instead, take a photo or video, note the location and report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

A group of licensed fishers and deckhands of the Lakes and Coorong Fishery participated in a TAFE course for their Coxswain grade 1 qualification Over the past 4 weeks.
The Southern Fishermans Association secured funding to make this course free of charge, saving thousands of dollars per person. They just had to get to Murray Bridge each day and have to complete a first aid course . Obviously not a lot of fishing was happening while this was going on But it will pay dividends in the future by complying with The Australian Maritime safety Authority requirements.

Normally this course would cost:
Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal
MAR20324 – Certificate II in Maritime Operations $5390
Shipboard Safety
MARSS00008 – Skill Set $1120
2026 Marine Radio Operator’s VHF & HF Skill Set
MARSS00010 – Skill Set$350
Total cost $6860

While there are some subsidies available it is unclear whether many would qualify individually

So hats off to those that took time off fishing to complete their course Which gives them a qualification for the future regardless of whether they stay in the fishery.
