What does literacy look like at Village Children Cooma?

When people hear the word “literacy”, they often think of children sitting at desks learning to read and write. In early childhood, literacy is much broader than that. It begins from birth and develops through everyday conversations, play, relationships and meaningful experiences.

So, what does literacy look like at Village Children Cooma?

Sharing books and enjoying stories together—even if children are simply exploring the pages.

Talking with educators and friends, asking questions, listening, and sharing ideas.

Drawing, painting, mark-making and experimenting with early writing.

Singing songs, reciting nursery rhymes, exploring sounds and enjoying music.

Engaging in imaginative play, such as writing shopping lists, menus, signs or letters in our home corner and dramatic play areas.

Expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas through language, gestures, art and play.

Every one of these experiences helps children build the foundations for reading, writing, communication and lifelong learning.

At Village Children Cooma, our educational program is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF v2.0), which recognises that children learn best through play, secure relationships and meaningful interactions. Literacy is embedded throughout our daily program and supports Outcome 5 – Children are Effective Communicators, as children develop confidence to express themselves, understand others and make sense of the world around them.

We also follow the National Quality Standard (NQS), creating rich learning environments that encourage curiosity, language development, creativity and a genuine love of learning.

At Village Children Cooma, we believe that literacy isn’t about rushing children to read or write—it’s about nurturing confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and capable learners through joyful, play-based experiences every day.

Now enrolling children aged 6 months to 6 years.

Staying Healthy Together

Welcome to our Staying Healthy Together Corridor – a space designed to support families in making informed choices about children’s health, nutrition and wellbeing.

Inspired by the NSW Health Munch & Move initiative, our display provides practical lunchbox ideas, healthy eating resources, seasonal food guides and information about the sugar content in common children’s snacks. By sharing simple tips and realistic ideas, we hope to make packing nutritious lunchboxes a little easier for busy families.

At Village Children, we believe healthy habits begin in early childhood. By working together with families, we can encourage children to enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods, stay active every day and develop positive relationships with food that will benefit them throughout their lives.

We invite you to stop by, explore our resources, borrow a recipe or lunchbox idea, and join us as we support every child to grow, learn and thrive through healthy choices.

Our Preschool Artists Have Been Busy!

Our preschool children have been exploring the beauty of Australian nature through a collaborative art project. Using collected sticks, leaves and natural materials, they created a stunning tree display, while painting colourful native birds, kangaroos, boomerangs and other Australian-inspired artwork.

Throughout this experience, the children used their creativity, strengthened their fine motor skills, shared ideas with friends and developed an appreciation for the natural environment. We are so proud of their teamwork and imagination, and the finished display has transformed our learning space into a celebration of nature, culture and creativity.

Today’s Smiling Faces

What a wonderful day of learning, laughter and discovery. The children spent the day exploring, creating and working together through play.

Our adventurous riders zoomed along the bike track, practising balance, coordination and taking turns as they enjoyed racing alongside their friends. Outdoors, our mud kitchen became a hub of investigation as children mixed, poured and created with natural materials, sharing ideas and developing their imaginations.

Our curiosity about birds continued as we explored feathers, nests, sticks, pinecones and animal figures. The children carefully sorted, compared and created bird habitats, sharing what they already knew while asking thoughtful questions about where birds live, what they eat and how they care for their babies.

The creek bed also sparked teamwork as children searched under rocks, investigated the natural environment and worked together to discover the hidden treasures around them. There were plenty of smiles as children challenged themselves on the bridge, celebrated their achievements and encouraged one another.

Days like today remind us that the best learning happens through play, exploration and the joy of discovering the world together.

More Than a Tunnel

Today, the tunnel became so much more than a place to crawl. Looking through the tunnel, the children all paused to peek through the opening, creating a new perspective and exploring the world from a different viewpoint. This simple experience encouraged curiosity, imagination and problem solving as they investigated what they could see from inside the tunnel. Moments like these remind us that open ended resources inspire children to create their own meaning, turning everyday equipment into opportunities for exploration, creativity and discovery. ♥️
