Screen Free Time for better Family Balance

In this day and age, we are bombarded with technology. We use it every day to communicate, interact, at work, school, and in our homes. There are many pros of technology use, such as connection and communication, access to information, and educational opportunities. But there are also cons, including an increase in sedentary behaviors impacting development, health, and well-being. So what do we do when our children become reliant on screens?

It's not always easy to implement screen-free time for our children. However, we can take steps to reduce screen time and support physical activity and development by creating a family plan around screen-free time that works for us. Here are some ideas:

1. Set clear boundaries: Establish specific times or situations when screens are not allowed. For example, no screens during mealtime or before bedtime.
2. Lead by example: Show your children the importance of balance by limiting your own screen time and engaging in other activities like reading, outdoor play, or family conversations.
3. Involve your child: Let them be part of the decision-making process. Discuss the benefits of reducing screen time and explore alternative activities they might enjoy.
4. Explore hobbies and interests: Encourage your child to discover new passions beyond screens. It could be art, music, sports, or any other activity that sparks their curiosity and promotes physical activity.

By implementing these strategies, we can help reduce screen time, increase physical activity, support development, and enjoy quality family time together.
Remember, finding the right balance is key. Let's make conscious choices about our technology use and create a healthy environment for our children to thrive.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Calling all parents and therapist! ๐Ÿค— Let's talk about practising teeth brushing skills for little ones with developmental delays. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿ’ช

The underlying skills required for teeth brushing include;

๐ŸชฅHolding and manoeuvring the tooth brush.
๐Ÿ‘โœ‹๏ธ Eye hand coordination.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Finger dexterity.
โœ๏ธ Wrist control.
๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ Maintaining posture and stability.

๐ŸŒŸ Dental hygiene is so important for our kiddos, and it's crucial to adapt our approach to meet their unique needs. Here are some tips and tricks to make teeth brushing a breeze:

1๏ธโƒฃ Make it a routine: Establish a consistent schedule for brushing their teeth. Regularity helps create familiarity and sets expectations.

2๏ธโƒฃ Sensory exploration: Consider the child sensory needs. For children with sensory sensitivities, introduce them to the toothbrush gradually. Let them touch, feel, and explore it at their own pace. Experiment with different textures, tooth pastes, and tooth brushes, such as soft-bristle brushes or silicone bristles, to find what works best for their comfort.

3๏ธโƒฃ Visual aids: Visual supports like social stories, visual schedules, videos, or picture charts can help children understand and follow the steps involved in brushing. Use visuals to demonstrate proper brushing techniques and encourage independence.

4๏ธโƒฃ Fun and engaging: Turn brushing into a playful activity! Sing songs, play their favorite music, or use a timer with a fun sound effect to create a positive and exciting experience. Incorporate their favorite characters into their toothbrush or toothpaste to make it more appealing.

5๏ธโƒฃ Practice Brushing Techniques: Demonstrate proper brushing techniques to children and encourage them to imitate your movements.

Remember, consistency and patience are key. Every child progresses at their own pace, so be flexible and adapt strategies based on their unique needs ๐Ÿ‘โœจ๏ธ
