🌸 I ADORE BIG PAINTINGS! 🎨

And do you know what my favourite part is?

The underpainting. ❤️

Those big, bold strokes… making marks… splashing colour around and just letting the painting happen.

My biggest hint when you’re starting a painting?

👉 Use colours you LOVE.

Don’t be too precious about it. Grab different sized brushes, stencils, spray paint, water spray, sticks — whatever makes interesting marks.

Rub some paint off.
Scratch into it.
Gouge it with a palette knife.
Let some of those beautiful layers underneath peek through.

These colours reminded me of the cosmos flowers that grew in my garden last year, and they became my inspiration for this painting. 🌸

I’m about halfway through now… and I’m already loving where it’s heading.

And the best part?

This big colourful painting will be ready to purchase at the Rotary Garden Viewing on Sunday 18th October. 💕

Meanwhile, Brett and I have been creating up a storm!

He’s been making sculptures and birdhouses, while I’ve been furiously painting away. 😂🎨

And we’ve also been super busy out in the garden getting everything ready.

🌿🌸 We’d love you to come and visit Cedarview and The Studio Coolamon.

Our garden is one of six fabulous gardens featured in this year’s Rotary Garden Viewing, and there will be morning and/or afternoon tea available too.

THIS is the part of teaching art that makes my heart happiest… 🥹❤️

When a student sends me a photo of something they’ve created at home after our class. 🎨

Knowing something we explored together inspired them to pick up their brushes again, have another go, and create something of their own…

That means so much to me. ❤️

It’s the little messages and photos that remind me why I love teaching so much.

Watching the inspiration continue long after they leave my studio is pretty special.

A Quiet Place to Remember

There are some people we never stop carrying with us.

A Quiet Place to Remember is a gentle celebration of love, memory and the little things that keep someone close long after they are gone.

Delicate paper daisies bloom beneath the graceful branches of a Japanese maple, while an ornate metal garden chair, lovingly made by my late father, sits quietly amongst the flowers.

For me, the chair is a beautiful reminder that although people may leave us, pieces of them remain — in the things they made, the gardens they touched, the memories they created and the love they left behind.

Perhaps this painting might become your quiet place to remember someone you love — a beautiful reminder that they are still part of your story.

What happens when you give preschoolers a scribble, some paint and a BIG imagination?

✨ MAGIC! ✨

Our little artists at Spring Kidz Early Learning Centre turned scribbles into the most wonderful, wacky creatures — with wings, crazy legs and lots of eyes!🐉🦋🦄🌈

There were no rules and no “wrong” way to create — just imagination, colour and lots of fun.

And my favourite moment?

That beautiful little face saying…

“I MADE THAT!” 🩷

Thank you, Spring Kidz, for letting me spend a morning creating with your gorgeous little artists including my Grand Daughter Darcie.

Sometimes all you need is a scribble + colour + imagination. 🎨✨

A perfect excuse for a girls’ day out, a catch-up with friends, or simply a leisurely day enjoying beautiful gardens and good company. Don’t forget morning of afternoon tea 💕

One of the things I feel incredibly lucky about through my art classes is the friendships I’ve made along the way. ❤️🎨

Dianna is one of those very special people.

She carefully saves for her art classes, and I’m always so appreciative and aware of just how much they mean to her. She may not be wealthy in the traditional sense, but Dianna has lived a wonderfully rich and colourful life.

Every time she comes to a private class, I discover another little piece of her story — the adventures, the ups and downs, the funny moments and the life lessons. And somehow, while I’m teaching her about art, she teaches me about life.

Dianna is also a wonderful reminder that the more you do, the better your art becomes. She listens, learns new techniques, has a go, makes mistakes, experiments… and then goes home and puts in the work.

She is developing her own creative voice one painting at a time, and I love watching that happen.

For me, that’s what these classes are really about. Yes, we learn about colour, paint, composition and technique — but we also share stories, encourage each other, laugh, create and grow.

I feel very lucky that art has brought people like Dianna into my life. 🌸🎨❤️

🍃 September Moments 🍃

Brett and I have spent the weekend going to war with the w**ds… and goodness me, they are winning a few battles! 😂🌱

But honestly, I love this time of year.

The trees are showing off their fresh lime-green, succulent new growth, and the hardy iris are beginning to herald the arrival of spring. 🌿💜

Our lawn is currently wearing a rather spectacular golden blanket of Cape w**d. It certainly has its pretty side — like a little field of gold — but unfortunately, it’s a pest, so out it must come! 🤞😬🌼

Amongst all the gardening chaos, we’ve had some beautiful visitors too. 🐦‍⬛🪺 Blue wrens flitting through the garden and native bees buzzing from flower to flower are a lovely reminder that our garden isn’t just ours. It’s a little haven for all sorts of creatures.

There’s something very special about watching the garden wake up after winter — new growth, colour, birds, bees and just enough w**ds to keep Brett and me on our toes! 🌿

🌸 Spring is definitely stirring in the garden.

I am working on a few paintings. Nothing finished that I can reveal yet.

🥣 WELL… I’VE BEEN PLAYING WITH CLAY! 💚🤍

My first attempt at hand-thrown pottery on a pottery wheel… and I have to say, I’m completely delighted! 😍

I was very generously gifted a pottery wheel, and the wonderful Chris Blair took the time to teach me how to throw a few little bowls.

And what a joy it was!

There’s something incredibly satisfying about sitting at the wheel, getting your hands covered in clay and watching a lump of mud slowly become something useful. 🥰

Were they perfectly round?
Absolutely not. 😂

Did they all turn out exactly as I imagined?
Not even close! But that’s the magic of making things by hand, isn’t it? It is harder than what it looks.

A little bit wonky… a little bit unexpected… and completely mine. 💚

I’ve made a little collection of green and white bowls, and I’m rather smitten with them.

I think I may have discovered another delightfully addictive creative habit!

A huge thank you to Chris for teaching me the basics and giving me the confidence to have a go.

First attempt… and definitely not my last!
