Thuringowa State High School Since 1987, we have developed strong traditions in academic excellence, sporting & cultural programs It is a young school, which opened in 1987.

Thuringowa State High School is situated in Vickers Road South in the heart of Riverway in the City of Townsville. In its short history the school has developed a fine tradition for academic excellence, sporting and cultural achievement and vibrant community spirit. It is especially noted for its small size, range of opportunities, acclaimed theatre restaurant, a very successful and pioneering Vo

cational Education Program. Thuringowa State High School serves students in Years 7 to 12, predominantly from its neighbourhood suburbs of Condon, Rasmussen, Kelso and Kirwan. Our students come from varied social, cultural and economic backgrounds and we provide initiatives designed to cater for the needs of all groups. The school has developed a strong tradition of providing its students with a large number of educational opportunities with an emphasis on development and extension of the individual.

We are excited to celebrate 2026 NAIDOC Week at Thuringowa State High School!

From Monday, 31 August to Thursday, 3 September 2026, our school community will come together for four days of culture, connection, learning and celebration, recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and communities.

This year marks ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ ๐˜๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ƒ๐ž๐š๐๐ฅ๐ฒ, and we are looking forward to a special week of activities and celebrations for our students.

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and communities.

Year 9 Geography students recently headed to Riverway for a field trip as part of their latest assessment.

Students explored ways Riverway connects ๐ฉ๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž, ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ž๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ, collecting primary data on how people travel to and use the local area.

They will now use the data they collected to propose strategies to improve Riverway and make it an even more attractive location for people to visit and enjoy. ๐ŸŒณโœจ

It was a great opportunity for students to take their classroom learning into our local community โ€” with the added bonus of spotting some turtles in the Ross River! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’ง

Over the weekend, our Year 7โ€“11 Drama students visited the Townsville Civic Theatre to watch Frozen! ๐ŸŽถโœจ

The performance was outstanding, with our students enjoying an incredible night of theatre, music and entertainment. Some of our students were even lucky enough to meet Anna after the show! ๐Ÿ‘‘โ„๏ธ

If you haven't yet secured a placement, now is the time to start contacting workplaces. Think about the industries or careers you are interested in and contact businesses to ask if they are able to host you for Work Experience Week.

On Tuesday, our school was honoured to be asked to represent Natalie Marr MP at the 60th Commemoration of the Vietnam War at Riverway, with Lincoln and Emmerson proudly representing our school on the day.

It was a moving occasion to remember the sacrifices and service of those who served in the โ€˜Forgotten Warโ€™, and our students were honoured to lay a wreath on behalf of Natalie Marr MP.

One message from the commemorative speeches that stood out was: โ€œRemembrance is not automatic.โ€ It is up to all of us to choose to remember and to share the stories of our history with the next generation.

We are incredibly proud of Lincoln and Emmerson for representing our school with such respect, dignity and gratitude.
