VSL and Doncaster Secondary College Welcome Korean Educators

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL), in collaboration with Doncaster Secondary College, was delighted to welcome a visiting delegation from Mokpo High School in South Korea on Thursday, 13 August 2026.

The delegation consisted of the school principal and 10 English and Mathematics teachers, who visited Australia as part of their professional and educational exchange program. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the Korean educators to learn more about the Victorian education system, observe school practices and share ideas and experiences with Australian educators.

Through the collaboration between the VSL and Doncaster Secondary College, the visitors were able to gain insights into teaching and learning approaches, school organisation and the role of language education in Victorian schools. The visit also provided an opportunity for professional dialogue, particularly in the areas of English and Mathematics education.

The VSL was pleased to support this international educational exchange and strengthen connections between Victorian and Korean educators. Such visits provide a wonderful platform for sharing educational practices, building professional networks and developing greater understanding between schools and education communities in Australia and South Korea.

The visit was a positive example of how collaboration between the VSL and mainstream schools can create meaningful opportunities for international engagement and professional learning.

ANU Languages in Australia Survey

A major language use research project is being undertaken by the Australian National University (ANU) in order to get a more accurate picture of the number of languages spoken in the country and add detail to the kind of information collected in the 2026 census.

They are seeking any anyone aged 18 years or older who lives in Australia and who speaks a language (or multiple languages) other than English well enough to have a conversation. Participants are asked to complete a short online survey.

As a major provider of language services in Australia, we hope you can contribute a few minutes to add to the nation’s language data.

Please share the survey with students over the age of 18 as well as members of your community.

Small Acts, Big Impact: Bullying No Way Week at VSL

From 17–21 August, VSL students took part in Bullying No Way Week, exploring how kindness, respect, empathy and inclusion can help make our classrooms safe and welcoming for everyone.

Across our Hindi, Sinhala, Romanian, Tamil and Punjabi classes, students participated in discussions and creative activities including hand posters, friendship chains and class displays – all reinforcing the message that small positive actions can make a big difference.

These were just some of the activities taking place, with classes across VSL centres and languages joining in throughout the week and finding their own ways to explore the importance of kindness, respectful relationships and standing up against bullying.

It was wonderful to see students of all ages engaging with these important messages and helping to create a culture where everyone feels safe, respected and included.

Book Week at VSL Dandenong!

Our Kannada students at VSL Dandenong have been busy celebrating Book Week with classroom projects, activities and a Book Week competition.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to get creative while exploring books, stories and the Kannada language.

Celebrating Onam at Hampton Park

On Saturday 15 August, our Malayalam students and teachers at Hampton Park Centre came together to celebrate Onam, a traditional festival celebrated by the people of Kerala in India.

Students created a colourful Pookalam floral decoration and enjoyed songs, dances, traditional activities and Onam games.

The day was extra special as it also marked India’s Independence Day, with students taking part in activities and performances to recognise the occasion.

A wonderful celebration filled with culture, colour, fun and plenty of smiles. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so memorable!

Celebrating our Premier’s VCE Award recipients!

On 21 July, the 2025 Premier’s VCE Awards celebrated some of Victoria’s highest-achieving VCE students — and we were incredibly proud to see 17 VSL students recognised for excellence in their language studies.

Our award recipients were recognised across Arabic, Bosnian, Chin Hakha, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian Second Language, Italian, Japanese Second Language, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Punjabi and Spanish — a wonderful reflection of the diversity, dedication and talent within our VSL community.

A special congratulations to Carola Molinari, who achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Italian.

These achievements are also a testament to the dedication of our VSL teachers and the support of families who encourage our students throughout their language learning journey.

Celebrating Language, Culture and Community

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) was proud to participate in the Templestowe Baptist Church Community Fun Day, celebrating the importance of language learning and cultural diversity.

Congratulations to our talented Korean language students for their outstanding traditional Korean drumming performance. They demonstrated that learning a language goes beyond the classroom—it comes alive through meaningful cultural experiences such as music, performance and teamwork.

It was also a pleasure to meet families from Persian, Chinese, Cantonese, Greek and Indian backgrounds and introduce them to the wide range of language programs offered by VSL. We were delighted to encourage families to consider enrolling their children in our 2027 VSL classes, whether to maintain their heritage language or learn a new one.

The event also provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with community organisations, including the Girls Guides Whitehorse District, highlighting the importance of developing language skills alongside leadership, teamwork and lifelong learning.

Thank you to everyone who visited our display and supported our students. Together, we continue to inspire young people to embrace languages, cultures and community.
