The Kindy children have been diving into the wonderful world of fairy tales through shared stories, puppets, and imaginative play. We have been reading fairy tales together, listening to stories told with puppets, and talking about the characters, places, and events that make each story special.

Inspired by these stories, children created their own fairy tale puppets. They carefully designed their characters, cut them out, and added paddle pop sticks before using them to retell stories in their own words. Some children recreated familiar tales, while others added their own ideas, changed parts of the story, and created new adventures.

Through this experience, children have been developing their imagination, confidence, language skills, and ability to share ideas with others. It has been wonderful to see children become storytellers and use play to bring their ideas to life.

You can continue the learning at home too! Share a favourite fairy tale, ask your child what they remember about the story, or encourage them to create their own characters and tell a new adventure.

Did you get a chance to see our kindergarten children's artwork at the Collingwood Park State School Art Show?

This year, we decided to include some group artworks as working together on a shared artwork gives children the chance to listen to one another's ideas, work as a team, solve problems together, and create something they can all feel proud of.

The Kindy children also completed a self-portrait drawing, a water paint painting, and a collage showing what kindergarten means and feels like to them. Their artwork reflects the friendships they've made, the places they love to play, and the many experiences that have made this year so special.

The Kindy children have been busy learning about the important role worms play in caring for our environment. Through setting up our own worm farm, the children are discovering how food scraps can be transformed into valuable nutrients that help gardens grow.

Making Children’s Thinking Visible

When children share their ideas, questions, and feelings, we can make their thinking visible and build meaningful learning from it.

It started to rain at Kindy and some children felt scared and unsure. This became an opportunity for shared conversations, emotional support, and learning together.

By staying close, listening, and reassuring the children we were able to create a space for children to express their feelings, ask questions, and share their ideas about rain and weather.

Through discussions and drawing, children explored where rain comes from, why it helps plants grow, and how it makes them feel. Their words and drawings helped capture their thinking, allowing us to reflect, wonder, and learn together.

This inquiry continues as we follow the children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the natural world within a safe, caring, and nurturing environment where they feel supported to explore, question, and learn.

Some of our most meaningful learning begins in simple, everyday moments—when children notice, wonder, and respond to the world around them.

Our ant inquiry began when children discovered ants in our outdoor space. This sparked curiosity, questions, and collaborative investigation as they explored where ants live, how they move, and what they do. Through observation, discussion, and shared theories, children demonstrated curiosity, persistence, and respect for living things. This learning was extended through intentional teaching, conversation, and reflection.

Our rain inquiry began when sudden rainfall led some children to feel unsure or afraid. Educators provided reassurance and stayed close, creating space for children to express their thoughts and feelings. Through group and individual discussions, children explored what rain is, how it feels, and why it happens.

Children then used drawing to make their thinking visible, revisiting and extending their ideas over time. Educators supported this process through listening, scribing, and responsive interactions that deepened shared thinking.

Across both experiences, learning was guided by children’s interests, strengthened through relationships, and made visible through thoughtful reflection.

When we slow down and notice, everyday moments become powerful learning journeys.

At our kindy, child safety is more than a policy — it’s our promise. As we explored the 10 Child Safe Standards, we realised most information is written for adults… so we changed that.

We created “Our Promise to Children” — in language children understand. But most importantly…We asked the children what safety means to them.

You’ll see their voices in: Our Promise, their understanding of the 10 Child Safe Standards; and their own risk assessments on: Stranger safety,personal boundaries and emotional safety.
