What a truly unforgettable last day of the year and a heartfelt farewell to a number of our incredibly talented students. Over the past few weeks, our students have been immersing themselves in the art of free verse poetry. They have experimented with rich figurative language—including imagery, metaphor, personification, and onomatopoeia—to express ideas, emotions, and moments from their world.

What has been inspiring to see is how confidently students have moved beyond simple sentence structures to create poems layered with meaning. Many have used visual literacy techniques—colour, placement, typography and illustration—to deepen their message and create a stronger emotional response for their audience.

To enhance their creativity and presentation, students also used digital platforms to design and complement their work, combining literacy and technology in authentic ways. This has given them agency to choose how their ideas are communicated, encouraging purposeful decision-making and artistic expression.

At Collector Public School, we embed High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) into everyday learning. Opportunities like this allow students to engage in high-level thinking, creativity, and self-expression across the curriculum. Their poetry showcases not only strong literacy skills, but also the depth of their imagination and voice as young writers.

Georgia is one of our past students, and we were lucky to have her at Collector Public School for seven years. It’s wonderful to see how her time here shaped who she is today, and even more rewarding to have her back helping out in our after-school program. Here’s what she had to say about her journey.

My time at Collector Public School has played a huge part in shaping who I am today. Growing up in a small school community taught me the importance of respect, responsibility, integrity, and resilience values that continue to guide me every day.

At Collector, respect was something we practiced constantly, respect for our teachers, our classmates, and ourselves. Learning to listen, cooperate, and care for others helped me build positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging.

Responsibility was another key value that I learned early on. In a small school, everyone has a role to play, and we all work together to make things happen. Whether it was helping organise events or supporting younger students, I learned how much a little effort and commitment can make a big difference.

Integrity has also been an important part of my journey. Collector encouraged me to be honest, fair, and true to my values, even when things were challenging. That lesson has stayed with me and helped me make good choices beyond primary school.

Resilience is something I’ll always be grateful to have developed here. When things didn’t go as planned, my teachers and classmates encouraged me to keep going and try again. That sense of perseverance has given me confidence to take on new challenges especially during the transition to high school.

Being part of a small school also meant we had special opportunities to connect through TREC. Taking part in TREC activities helped me socialise with students my age from other schools, build friendships, and feel much more prepared for high school. It showed me that no matter where we come from, we can always find common ground.

Now, having completed my schooling, it feels really special to be back at Collector working in the after-school program while I figure out what I want to do next. It’s rewarding to give back to the school that helped shape me and to be a positive influence for the next generation of students.

Collector Public School will always hold a special place in my heart. The lessons I learned here respect, responsibility, integrity, and resilience will continue to guide me wherever life takes me next.

🎾 Did you know…? 🎾…that our K–6 students participate in weekly tennis lessons with Dave from Ridland Tennis throughout Term 4?

Dave has been teaching tennis at Collector for a number of years. He delivers engaging and interactive tennis sessions that promote physical activity, confidence, and a love of sport among our students. Our students always have an enjoyable time on the court with Dave — the sessions are filled with energy, laughter, and learning.

Today, in class, as part of our literacy unit, students have been learning about figurative language; their task, to create a free verse poem about one aspect of the school.

Below is their draft, created as a whole class (grades 3-6).

Playground

At the heart of our small school,
a land of imagination awaits.
The playground, like Disneyworld,
is full of fun, bravery, creativity and laughter.

Children scream with joy, their wonders coming alive,
the call of the playground ever-present.
They find adventure through games and friendship—
smiling, laughing, forgetting about time.

Our past students often say that Collector gave them more than just an education — it gave them confidence, connection, and lifelong friendships. Here’s one of their reflections.

“I have been asked to share my experience while attending Collector Public School. I feel that my self-esteem, resilience and leadership skills were grounded at Collector Public School. In a small school I was ‘seen’ and encouraged on a daily basis.

I had many sporting, leadership and academic opportunities, whereas at a large school they would have been shared with many other students. After-school activities in Collector did not exist when I was growing up, so we made our own games. My siblings and I played weekend sport which allowed us to make friends, and we also travelled to represent our district. Umpiring and coaching teams was a natural progression for me, thanks to the lifelong skills I developed at Collector Public School.

Because I didn’t have to travel to town I had more afternoon time with friends and family. Staying grounded in the community helped me thrive and this is what I have returned to as an adult. Collector is where I feel supported, allowing me to succeed in all my life choices. Transitioning to High School was a big step but was made easier by knowing who I was as a person and being academically ‘on par’ with other students. I attended High School with friends I made through netball, who are now friends for life.

I honestly feel that my mental health and self-esteem would have suffered in a larger school. I highly recommend Collector Public School for your family.”

Over the past year, Collector Public School has had the opportunity to help shape important conversations about rural education — from national conferences and university forums to presentations with the Secretary and Deputy Secretaries of the NSW Department of Education.

Through these opportunities, our school has been able to share what makes small schools like ours so special — strong relationships, deep connection to community, flexible teaching, and the ability to truly know and support every student.

We’ve also been able to highlight the challenges faced by Teaching Principals, their staff and small rural schools, helping policy and curriculum teams understand how to better support those leading and teaching in diverse contexts.

It’s been encouraging to see growing recognition of the vital role small schools play in their communities — not only as places of learning, but as the heart of rural life.

We’re proud that Collector Public School continues to represent small schools across NSW in these discussions, ensuring that rural voices are heard and valued.
