What a pleasant and positive word: СМЕЯТЬСЯ/to laugh. A word for a fun process that makes us happy and able to extend our lives!

In the Russian language there are several basic words denoting this action, each of which has its own meaning.

1. СМЕЯТЬСЯ is the most basic, frequently used word.

Мы смеялись весь вечер.
We laughed all evening.

Она смеялась каждый раз, когда смотрела этот сериал.
She laughed every time she watched this series.

Он посмотрел на меня и начал смеяться.
He looked at me and began to laugh.

2. ХОХОТАТЬ - this means laughing loudly, sincerely, contagiously.

Он начал хохотать над ситуацией.
He began to laugh at the situation.

Сегодня после работы я встретил друга и мы хохотали, вспоминая наше путешествие.
Today, after work, I met a friend and we laughed, remembering our journey.

Она хохотала и не могла остановиться.
She laughed and could not stop.

3. ХИХИКАТЬ/To giggle - this means laughing quietly, briefly, can be negative (laugh at someone, expressing malice, gloating).

Девочка хихикала, показывая пальцем на кошку.
The girl giggled, pointing a finger at the cat.

Ребята переглянулись и начали хихикать.
The guys looked at each other and began to giggle.

4. ГОГОТАТЬ/To gaggle - this means doing it loudly, for a long time, and even this looks unattractive and immodest. (in general, it is the destiny of geese to gaggle)
