Thanks Rosemary for representing Steiner schools in this convo!
In the news. Central Coast Steiner School is helping lead an important national conversation about technology in education.
This week, Principal Rosemary Michalowski was interviewed on Ben Fordham’s 2GB program, discussing the school’s approach to classroom technology – protecting the early years by delaying screens until Year 5, placing handwriting at the centre of learning, and allowing children to develop through movement, creativity and human connection.
The school was also featured in The Sydney Morning Herald, as part of a growing discussion about NSW schools that are quietly reversing course on classroom laptops and reducing screen time in the classroom.
For the 52 Steiner schools across Australia, this careful approach has always been part of our educational philosophy. We are not anti-technology – we believe technology has an important place. We are simply thoughtful about when and how it best supports children’s healthy development and learning.
As Rosemary shared during the interview, quoting a Victorian primary school principal: “We rolled the technology out. We looked at the data — the wellbeing, the learning, the creativity — and rolled it all back in again.”

The teachers, families and alumni of Steiner/Waldorf schools already know (and feel) the outcomes of this kind of education. To name a few:
🙌🏽 interdisciplinary academic knowledge and skills for success in any field of work
🙌🏽 continued joy in learning
🙌🏽 a sense of ethics that’s built on an understanding of the interconnectedness of all things
🙌🏽 strong, grounded sense of connection to self, others and the world
Students at Casuarina thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Academic results are easy to test. The love, joy in learning, happiness and creativity we foster is a lot harder to measure.
Join this exciting research project if you’re eligible.
Attention Steiner/Waldorf Alumni. Something significant is underway for Steiner education in Australia. We've partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast to research graduate outcomes.
We need to hear from as many alumni as possible to make the results count. The more voices in the room, the stronger the story we can share.
If you attended an Australian Steiner/Waldorf high school we would love to hear from you. To find out more and access the survey, click on the link:
