ued throughout my further education. As a child I performed as a soloist at weddings and at the closing ceremony of the 1994 World Masters Games. During my high school years I studied at TAFTA, (The Australian Film and Television Academy) run by Pamela Duncan and John Orcsik, and continued to study Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary dance, and flute. I then went on to attend the Central Queensland Conservatorium for 5 years, from 1999 to 2004, which provided a hectic and practical approach to the Music Theatre, Jazz and Contemporary genres, dance, drama, piano, musicianship, and music theory, emerging with a dual Bachelor of Performing Arts and Music degree. During this time I began working in conjunction with Facets Studio Mackay helping private vocal students and working on such yearly events as The Mackay City Christmas Carols and the Central Queensland PCYC run school “Idol Competition” working with hundreds of student aged singers as both a vocal coach and judge. I also had many opportunities to tour in bands as part of the practical approach to the degree CQU was giving me, and had the privilege of working and learning at the feet of some of the most talented and accomplished musicians and singer songwriters of our time. These include James Morrison AM, Don Radar, Emma Pask, Killing Heidi, Jim Kelly, Paul Kelly and Graham Conners, directors such as Peter Cousens, and some incredible lecturers such as professional jazz pianist and singer Viv Middleton of Brisbane Conservatorium, international tenor and vocal technique specialist Garrick Jones and Kim Kirkman, previously of the Ten Tenors and one of the founding members, someone who got the very best out of me. Shoutout to Judith Brown if you ever read this.. Director of the CQU Conservatorium and the best teacher I have ever witnessed. I have gleaned everything I can from these masters while I had access. In my final years at uni, I also taught at Mackay Special School where I both planned and taught 10-week interactive music programs for special needs students of varying ages and disabilities. I now use the concepts learned during this period to structure classes empowering individuals with learning and behavioural challenges through music therapy and singing. My 23 years of experience include over 8 years as director of www.sing! choral group, working as a one on one vocal teacher and choir master for Holy Spirit College in Mackay, then Trinity Catholic School in Beenleigh, Kids on Keys Music Schools across the Gold Coast and finally running my own music studio teaching vocal technique, music theory and musicianship, flute and piano for performers. I have always had a fascination with different teaching and learning styles. This has led me to explore many different approaches such as the Bel Canto and Speech singing vocal methods, The Suzuki approach to Instrumental Learning and the Kodaly Method. My lessons and programs incorporate these methods and are structured based on the research by Robert J. Marzano on the five dimensions of learning, which approaches music education holistically, and embraces the individual needs of each student in a fun, structured and supportive environment. I am also a professional singer and performer and have performed in stage musicals such as Grease, Calamity Jane, the Blues Brothers Show and The Rocky Horror Show, and have toured extensively in bands around Australia and in stage performances, most notably in tours with my band Tickled Pink throughout Asia. I now focus on teaching and keep it local in my rock band Betti. I can’t, as a teacher, always tell you you’re the best yet. What I want to do is support your path at every step, dream with you, and give you the tools you need to reach your potential and find your individuality as a performer. Each goal you achieve, I’m going to be as excited as you, trust me! I want to help break down what must seem like a mountain into smaller, more manageable steps. There are a lot of hills to climb in the performing arts world, anxiety, auditions, competition, and many new and wonderful things thrown in along your path. Let me share with you the many methods to deal with those challenges and go confidently forward in your journey. Roxy P studio runs programs for performing arts lovers in a fun, free, light way and we have made it as accessible to as many people as possible. You can learn everything you will need to get started there. Junior and Senior classes, (Sing, Laugh and Move) and our choir Bella Voce, all run in conjunction with the beautiful people at Macksville Ex Services Club. My job as your private teacher is to help identify your strengths and weaknesses, decide with you what suits your needs and dreams, and show you how to get there. We will use songs I choose to challenge you, and material you choose to keep the passion aflame, exercises to help and empathetic feedback to keep you on track. We will laugh off the bad days and hit hard on the good days. I can provide everything you need to practice if that’s your thing, or we can just make the most of the lesson time you have when you’re busy. I am here to help you!
