We are absolutely thrilled to congratulate Julie Carey, the dedicated and inspiring director of Kulai Preschool, on receiving the Nanga Mai Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Early Childhood Education.
Through unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and a deep passion for nurturing young minds, Julie has truly made a difference in the lives of countless children and families. Her commitment to creating a supportive, engaging, and enriching environment has set the foundation for the growth, development, and success of future generations.
What makes this accolade even more special is the humility and gratitude she carries with her. Julie always emphasizes that running a preschool is never a solo effort—she praises her incredible team who work tirelessly every day to ensure every child feels loved, supported, and empowered. Her leadership has fostered a culture where teamwork, creativity, and care, shine brightly.

Aunty Julie Carey has spent more than 30 years as Centre Director of Kulai Preschool in Coffs Harbour, shaping generations of Aboriginal children's earliest years of learning.

Kulai has cared for and educated Aboriginal children since 1961. Some of its former students now sit on the preschool's own management committee, a sign of how deeply the service is woven into the community it serves. Under Aunty Julie's leadership, Kulai is rated Exceeding and was one of the first services in the area to revitalise local language, with Garby Elders sharing stories and knowledge directly with the children. She also mentors new preschool directors across the region, passing on three decades of experience to the next generation of early childhood leaders.

Last year, this outstanding contribution to early childhood education was recognised with a Nanga Mai Award, for Outstanding Contribution to Early Educational Achievement by an Aboriginal Staff Member.

Nominations for the 21st Nanga Mai Awards close Wednesday 29 July. If you know an Aboriginal staff member in early education doing work like Aunty Julie's, now is the time to put them forward.

National Reconciliation Week 2026

The artwork is called Gaagal.
Gumbaynggirr Bundjalung artist Otis Hope Carey explains its inspiration and significance:

‘All of my paintings connect to water. This artwork uses the ocean as a metaphor for people from all walks of life swirling together to be ‘all in’ for reconciliation.

‘The phrase ‘Gaagal’ translates to ‘Ocean’, and it is the totemic spiritual emblem of the Gumbaynggirr people. It’s a really important clan totem and holds a lot of healing elements for us.
