Understanding Swimming "Myths"

My child no longer requires lessons since they have learned to swim.

However, the reality is that it can be challenging for parents to accurately assess their child's swimming competence. For instance, just because a child can swim from one end of the backyard pool to the other does not necessarily mean they have acquired all the necessary skills to be safe around water.

Royal Life Saving Australia's National Swimming and Water Safety Framework outlines three national benchmarks for children at different ages:
- by age 6
- minimum competencies by age 12
- minimum competencies by age 17 years

Zeeswim Aquademy's benchmarks include:

Orange Clownfish, Blue Clownfish, and Red Clownfish - water familiarization.
Gold Fish - developing early confidence in the water.
Tang Fish - enhancing early confidence in the water and mastering safety swim techniques (swim, roll, swim).
Angelfish - mastering freestyle and backstroke along with essential safety behaviors.
Dart Fish - mastering freestyle and backstroke while applying real-world survival and rescue skills, including the introduction of breaststroke and butterfly kicks.

Sadly, many Australian children still possess poor or limited swimming skills. Like anything else, "practice makes better." If you want your child to maintain their swimming abilities and independent drowning prevention skills, it is crucial that they practice regularly.

Understanding Swimming "Myths"

It's essential for parents to recognise that the journey of learning to swim and acquiring survival skills isn't always straightforward. So, don't feel disheartened if your child doesn't seem to be advancing every week. The truth is, there will often be periods of stagnation and even some setbacks while a new skill is being mastered, followed by a resurgence in progress πŸ’«

This pattern is common when learning any new ability in life!

At times, it may even seem like a skill that was previously acquired is slightly diminishing while a new one is being developed, but rest assured, it will eventually rebound!

Learn to swim "Myths"

Winter swimming will make my child sick πŸ€§πŸ€’

It's a widespread misconception that swimming in winter will lead to your child falling ill. In reality, regular physical activities such as swimming can enhance your child's immunity and lower the chances of getting sick.

At Zeeswim Aquademy, we utilise both antibacterial and antiviral cleaning products to ensure a healthy environment for you and your family to enjoy 🧽πŸͺ£.

I have a few tips to keep warm during the winter months that can be really helpful. By following some or all of my suggestions, we can make sure our swimmers remain warm, cozy, and hopefully a bit healthier throughout the winter season. If you're interested in these tips, just search for "winter tips" on the Zeeswim Aquademy page, or feel free to contact me, and I can send you a copy via email.

MYTH:
Swimming in winter gives you colds and flu 🀧😷
FACT:
Colds and flu are viruses. Children are at no greater risk of catching a cold from swimming lessons than from any other public place such as schools, childcare, shopping centres or playing with mates!

MYTH:
All πŸ‘‚πŸ»ear infections come from swimming
FACT:
While outer ear infections can be caused from swimming in poor quality , inner ear infections are generally unrelated to swimming 🏊
