Gumbaynggirr Ngaawa | Word of the Week
Today’s word is Barrmarrany.
📚Today’s word is: Barrmarrany
💬 Meaning: Family
Language grows stronger when we hear it, speak it and share it together. We encourage our families and community to practise today’s word throughout the day.
✨ Have a go and use Barrmarrany with someone today!

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples | 9 August 2026
Today we join Indigenous Peoples around the world in recognising the strength, knowledge, cultures and living traditions that have sustained communities for generations.
This year’s theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” shines a light on the knowledge holders and caregivers who carry and pass on vital cultural knowledge, supporting the wellbeing, identity and continuity of Indigenous Peoples.
Indigenous knowledge systems are more than knowledge from the past. They are living systems that continue to guide how communities care for Country, family, community and one another.
At Maam Giingana Gumbaynggirr, we see the same strength in the revitalisation and transmission of Gumbaynggirr language.
Language carries our knowledge, our stories, our relationships and our ways of understanding the world. When we teach and learn Gumbaynggirr, we are not simply teaching words — we are creating space for knowledge to be carried forward, strengthened and shared with the next generation.
Our work in language revitalisation is part of a much bigger global movement: Indigenous communities reclaiming, protecting and strengthening their languages, cultures and knowledge systems for generations to come.
Today, we honour Indigenous knowledge holders, Elders, educators, language custodians, caregivers and communities around the world who continue to safeguard this knowledge and ensure it lives on.

Today is National Sorry Day. 🤍
An important day to reflect on the Stolen Generations and the strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their homes. We honour and acknowledge the truth of our history, the resilience of those impacted, and the importance of healing.
Darrundang to all those who have walked before us. 👣

This Week our school was fortunate enough to have students visiting from Aotearoa (New Zealand). What an amazing experience it was sharing space with a culture that showed so much respect to us, and we to them. Both cultures danced, sung and knew that a special moment had been shared. Darrundang to our visitors. 💙

Miimi’s play such an important role in shaping the lives of their junuybin. Through their care, strength, and everyday guidance, they help build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging that carries through life. We’re looking forward to coming together as a school community to celebrate and acknowledge our Miimi’s. See flyer for details. 💙🦋💐
