We are proud to share some of the important work weโ€™ve been doing at Merri-bek Primary School with Bank First, deepening our understanding of Acknowledgement of Country and, importantly, the meaning and responsibility that sits behind the words.

This work is about moving beyond acknowledgement as a statement or routine. It is about listening, learning and building genuine understanding, respect and connection to Country.

A powerful learning experience for our staff and students, and another important step in our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, inclusion and belonging.

Happy Principals Day! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŒŸ

Today is an important time for us all to recognise the exceptional leaders at the heart of our school. ๐Ÿ‘

Principals are more than educators: they are community builders, mentors, steady guides, and advocates for every childโ€™s wellbeing and success. ๐ŸŒˆโœจ Today, we celebrate the dedication, care and leadership shown every day, guided by our school values of resilience, responsibility, and respect.

With heartfelt gratitude, weโ€™d like to acknowledge our wonderful principal and assistant principals:
Maria (Principal)
Bianca (Assistant Principal)

๐ŸŽ‰โœจ What a brilliant day of learning! Yesterday, our Grade 1/2 and Grade 3/4 students visited each otherโ€™s classrooms to share their final projects for their inquiry units. ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Grade 3/4 students created presentations on the iPads about Australian History and shared their knowledge with confidence.
๐Ÿชฒ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Grade 1/2 students showed off their minibeast posters and dioramas, explaining all their amazing facts and ideas!

This was such a great opportunity to build connections across the school while practising key skills like communication, collaboration, confidence, presenting, and learning from each other. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿค

โ„๏ธ Wishing everyone a great winter school holidays! Enjoy a well earned break!

Walk Safely to School Day๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ›ด

What a wonderful morning! Today our students joined schools across Australia for National Walk Safely to School Day by walking, wheeling and scooting to school to build healthy habits, practise road safety and reduce traffic around our gates.

Highlights
- Healthy breakfast: ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒ fresh fruit was provided for students on arrival.
- Great participation: ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ many children walked, rode or scooted to school.
- Safety first: ๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ‘€ students practised Stop, Look, Listen and Think, younger children were supervised and held hands when crossing. ๐Ÿค

How families can keep this going
- Walk with your child where possible. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ
- Supervise children under 10 and hold their hand when crossing. ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿค
- Make it a routine - regular walking or scooting boosts health, focus and safer school zones. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿง

Thank you to all families and staff who helped make today safe and successful, we loved seeing so many active, smiling students! ๐Ÿ˜„

Last Friday our Grade 1/2s had a fantastic handsโ€‘on Minibeast Incursion ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฆ‹. Our students explored live minibeasts (butterflies, stick insects, crickets and more), rotated through activity stations to study life cycles and habitats, used microscopes ๐Ÿ”ฌ to examine specimens, and safely handled and fed critters under the presentersโ€™ guidance ๐Ÿค.

This experience links directly to our Inquiry focus on minibeasts and to nonโ€‘fiction writing in Literacy โœ๏ธ. Our students observed features, adaptations, habitats and food chains ๐ŸŒฑโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ›โžก๏ธ๐Ÿฆ during the incursion and will use those real examples to write reports, information texts and labelled diagrams back in class ๐Ÿ“š.

Huge thanks to the Minibeast Incursions team for an engaging, curriculumโ€‘aligned visit that will inspire our scientists and writers for weeks to come! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŽถ Principals and music leaders champion music education for our students ๐ŸŽถ

Our Principal, Maria Giordano, represented Victorian school leaders at a reception at Admiralty House this week and took part today in a national round table with principals, music educators and representatives from across Australia to promote formal music education in every government primary school.

This work matters for our students because quality music programs:
- Develop confidence, creativity and communication skills ๐ŸŽค
- Improve concentration, memory and literacy foundations ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“š
- Support social-emotional wellbeing and teamwork ๐Ÿคโค๏ธ
- Provide equitable access to cultural and artistic learning ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŒ

We thank the Governorโ€‘General, the Hon. Ms Sam Mostyn AC Patron of Alberts Music Education for hosting the reception and supporting this important initiative. The round table focused on the key supports, barriers and needs to ensure every government school student can benefit from music education. ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽน
