In the saddest of news, another pedestrian has died today at the Bell Street & Sydney Road intersection, state-managed, arterial roads. Our sincerest condolences to this person's family. We are devastated.
While we wait for a safety audit in this area, we are keen to see Transport Victoria take urgent action to make these roads safe for pedestrians.

A young man has lost his life at the corner of Elm Grove and Bell Street. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and everyone affected by this tragedy. This intersection sits between schools, childcare centres and family homes. Families walk, ride and cross here every day — and many have long feared a tragedy like this. A comprehensive safety plan for Bell Street corridor is urgently needed. As parents, residents, and road users, we have pleaded for change. We urge the Victorian Government and all responsible agencies to act swiftly and comprehensively. No more lives should be lost before safety is taken seriously.

The Inquiry into Road Safety Behaviours is clear:
Fix arterial roads near schools.
That means Bell St. Sydney Rd. Elm Grove. Urquhart St. Pentridge Blvd.
We’re calling for a full safety review — because walking to school shouldn’t be this risky.

Just yesterday, a Coburg family had a terrifying near-miss at the Elm Grove & Bell St intersection. Their child saw the green pedestrian light and stepped forward—just as a van ran the red light to turn. It was close.

The streets of Coburg are dangerous for children with near misses commonplace. We are calling for a comprehensive safety review of Bell street precinct, including Bell Street/Elm Grove, Elm grove/Urquhart st, Urquhart st/Pentridge Bld, Bell street/Sydney road. This is a hotspot for foot and bike traffic for Coburg Primary and Coburg High school students & young families travelling to and from Coburg Children’s Centre & the Maternal and Child Health Nurse. Improvements to safety measures such as enforcement cameras and supervised crossings are needed. Join us to protect Coburg‘s most vulnerable pedestrians.
