Over each week, play dough is often something the children ask for — sometimes even daily! 💕 Because I know the children and their interests, I can offer it when I see they’re ready for it or when it fits naturally into our day.

It’s lovely watching how each child uses it differently — squeezing, rolling, flattening, cutting, poking and creating. They’re building fine motor skills, hand strength, coordination and creativity, all while simply enjoying something they love.

Following their interests and giving them opportunities to explore at their own pace is a big part of our everyday learning at Maree’s family daycare Cobram.

Hot, Cold & Warm 🌡️

Over the last few weeks, the children have been exploring temperatures through lots of hands-on play, experiences and conversations about what is hot, cold and warm.

🧊 We’ve explored frozen ice cubes with our zoo and safari animals, enjoyed pretend play around our campfire where the children could “cook”, and completed a hot and cold colouring activity. We also explored a fun cold sensory experience with shaving cream and ducks, before adding warm water so the children could wash their ducks. Also the barbies enjoyed a warm, bubbly bath too! 🫧🛁

Through all of these experiences, the children have been encouraged to talk about and recognise the differences between hot, cold and warm, building their understanding through play, sensory experiences and everyday conversations.

🌿Small World, Big Learning🌿

Last week our sensory tray was all about roads, trucks and lots of pouring and filling. 🚜🛣️

This week, I followed the children’s interests and changed things up! The roads and trucks were removed and replaced with small bowls, containers and spoons, creating a new way to explore our pebbles and treasures. 🥄🪨

The children particularly enjoyed carefully picking out the different coloured pebbles and placing them into separate bowls, along with lots of scooping, pouring, filling and transferring.

It’s lovely to see how simply changing a few materials can create a whole new learning experience — encouraging fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, sorting and early mathematical thinking, all through play. 💚

Following their interests, extending their learning and letting their curiosity lead the way. ✨

Learning through play. 🪨🚜
This week children explored natural stones in their own unique ways. Some sorted them into piles, others filled containers, transported them with trucks and created their own ideas along the way. Open-ended play encourages curiosity, problem-solving, fine motor development and imagination. 💚

✨🎉 Celebrating 13 wonderful years! 🎉✨
On the 9th of January, Maree’s Family Daycare Cobram proudly celebrated 13 years of learning, laughter and growing together.
Although I was on a short break at the time, this milestone was far too special not to celebrate.
I’m incredibly grateful to all past and present families for your trust and support over the years. Being able to run my own family daycare from home and care for your precious little ones is something I truly love and feel so proud of 🥰

Here’s to many more years of learning through play, happy moments and special memories 💛✨
