Congratulations to Brandyn Sauer on completing his first solo flight today in VH-UNL (Piper Warrior) 🛩️

After building up to the milestone with instructor Dennis, Brandyn was signed off by Ayush and sent flying solo from Runway 06 for the very first time.

Waiting back on the ground to celebrate were plenty of familiar faces, including his dad Martin (a long-time part of the Royal Aero Club family and until recently the Club’s CEO) along with his brother Tristan.

A fantastic achievement for Brandyn and a pretty special moment for the whole family. Congratulations again from all of us at the Royal Aero Club 👏🏻👏🏻

Congratulations to Ethan Hrnjak on completing his first solo flight this afternoon in VH-HCC (Cessna 152) 🛩️

After spending the past few months working towards the milestone with instructor Dennis, today he completed a successful solo check with Ayush and was sent off from Runway 24 in HCC to complete his first solo circuit!

Congratulations to Fred Robertson on completing his first solo flight this afternoon in VH-HCC (Cessna 152) 🛩️

After flying with the Club on and off since October last year as one of our weekend warriors, today all that training came together as Fred took to the skies by himself for the very first time!

Following a solo check with instructor Kam Cheung, Fred was sent off from Runway 06 in HCC to complete his very first circuit with an empty seat beside him.

Fred has done much of his training with instructor Adrian Wong over the past year, making it great to have both Adrian and Kam there to celebrate the milestone with him afterwards.

Australian grassroots aviation on the global stage ✈️🇦🇺🇺🇸

RFACA President Lachlan Hyde has returned from EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 after delivering three invited forums on engaging aviation’s next generation, rebuilding flying clubs, and the future of grassroots aviation.

The presentations brought an Australian perspective to one of the world’s largest aviation gatherings, drawing on experience rebuilding the Royal Aero Club of NSW, developing youth flying pathways at Camden Airport and advocating nationally for the grassroots aviation sector.

Across the week conversations with EAA chapters as well as flying clubs and aviators from the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia reinforced just how many of the challenges facing grassroots aviation are shared globally.

“The aircraft and technology will change enormously over the coming decades, but somebody will still need a first flight, an instructor, an airport and a community that says there is a place for them here,” Mr Hyde said.

“Aviation’s future still has to start somewhere.”

Congratulations to Savannah Tonacia on completing her first solo flight yesterday morning in VH-HCC (Cessna 152) 🛩

Taking off from Runway 24 at 0724, Savannah flew her first solo circuit on the final day of our Winter Flying Training Camp.

Pictured here with instructor Harry D**g, who sent her solo this achievement reflects the dedication and hard work Savannah has shown throughout her training. It’s a moment she’ll never forget and one that’s only the beginning of many more exciting adventures in the sky.

Congratulations to Jude Jungwirth on completing his first training area solo today in VH-UNL (Piper Warrior) 🛩

Departing Runway 06, Jude became the first Royal Aero Club student to complete a training area solo under the new airspace arrangements introduced to support the commencement of operations at Western Sydney International Airport this week. He took a scenic route over the Wollondilly before returning to Camden via The Oaks.

This flight marks another major milestone in Jude’s aviation journey building on the skills and confidence developed throughout his training while also showcasing the Club’s successful transition to the new operating environment.

Congratulations again Jude from all of us at the Royal Aero Club on this fantastic achievement. We can’t wait to see where your aviation journey takes you next! 👏🏻👏🏻

Congratulations to Thomas Wood on completing his first solo flight yesterday afternoon in VH-HUZ (Cessna 152) 🛩

Threading his way between passing showers, Thomas made the most of a break in the weather to depart Runway 24 and complete a fantastic first solo circuit. Despite the challenging conditions throughout the day, he flew with confidence and returned to Camden with a smile that says it all.

Pictured here with instructor Harry D**g who sent him solo and instructor Aaron Chisholm who guided Thomas through the majority of his flight training, this achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication that’s gone into reaching this milestone.

Congratulations to Lachie Palethorpe on completing his first solo flight earlier today in VH-HUZ (Cessna 152) 🛩

Taking off from Runway 24, Lachie flew a fantastic solo circuit before touching down to celebrate one of the biggest milestones in every pilot’s journey. It was a well-earned achievement and one he’ll never forget.

The Royal Aero Club of NSW was proud to be represented at Safeskies 2026 in Canberra last month, a national aviation safety conference bringing together leaders from across industry, government, defence, education, and the next generation of aviation.

Representing the Club was President Lachlan Hyde and Elliot Powell (one of our volunteers and PPL students) who attended as a Next Gen attendee at an early stage of his aviation career journey.

Across the conference the importance of safety culture, collaboration, and shared learning was a clear theme with perspectives from senior aviation leaders, including representatives from CASA, the ATSB, Airservices Australia, the Department of Infrastructure, Defence, and the RAAF, through to university students and emerging aviation professionals.

For RACNSW, being part of conversations like this is an important reminder that aviation safety is not built in isolation. It is shaped by clubs, schools, regulators, operators, instructors, students, volunteers, and future leaders all working together.

We thank Safeskies Australia for hosting such a valuable forum, and for supporting opportunities for emerging aviators like Elliot to be part of the room.
