National Science Week is here, and it's time to take a proper look at the leaves, petals, and bark you pass every day. University grounds aren't just landscaping - they’re active, living laboratories.

Swipe through to discover some of the incredible local plant science hiding in plain sight around campus. Think about:

📸 Adaptive Structures: The shedding, peeling bark of native Eucalypts is a powerful adaptation, allowing the tree to renew its surface and shed pests.

📸 Pollination Success: Vibrant blue berries are a clear indicator of successful pollination, showing how urban foliage supports native pollinators.

📸 Water Management: The fine, silvery hairs (trichomes) on the leaves seen up close are a micro-level adaptation that traps moisture and reduces transpiration in tough climates.

You don't need a lab coat to engage with botany. Next time you're walking across campus, look up at the canopy, check out the soil, and appreciate the complex biology powering our everyday environment.

Virtual school takes lessons to war-torn and remote regions Monash University has been recognised for its online outreach that helps children from the outback to Ukraine to Afghanistan.

Learn everything you need to know about the Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology Advanced at our webinar NEXT WEEK.

This course is for registered psychologists who are seeking advanced training in educational and developmental psychology.

Eligible applicants include:
✅ registered psychologists with AHPRA, including those who have completed a 5+1 internship.
✅ registered psychologists with AHPRA who completed a 4+2 internship, and have held General Registration for a minimum duration of 12 months

Graduates of the MEDPA can apply to undertake a registrar program in Educational and Developmental Psychology to attain an area of practice endorsement.

Please note that if you are not yet a generally registered psychologist, then the Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology (MEDP) is the relevant degree to undertake.

Young Australians aren't facing isolated challenges, they are navigating a polycrisis.

New research from the Monash Centre for Youth Policy and Education Practice highlights how economic, social, and environmental pressures compound one another.

Speaking to SBS News, lead author and Monash Education Professor Lucas Walsh emphasized that solutions must address these interconnected roots:

"These are all embedded within the idea of a polycrisis, which involves overlapping independent events in crisis that intersect and amplify each other."

According to the latest findings, young Australians see urgent action needed across three major fronts:

• Affordable Housing: Jumped from 60% (2022) to 82% (2025)
• Employment Opportunities: Escalated from 48% (2022) to 64% (2025)
• Climate Change: Highlighted by 44% as a major priority

Professor Walsh is calling on policymakers to abandon siloed approaches and give young people a meaningful voice in shaping their own future.
