🧠 Can students think critically about something they don't yet know?

In the latest episode of Let's Talk Teaching, lecturers from Monash Education, Dr Matt Fyfield and Dr Stoo Sepp, join our host Associate Professor Rebecca Cooper to unpack the key ideas behind learning science.

Drawing on research from cognitive science, they explain why prior knowledge shapes how we interpret the world, and why asking students to solve complex problems before they've built that knowledge can lead to frustration rather than meaningful learning.

They explore how explicit teaching provides the foundation students need to move from novice to expert — gradually releasing responsibility so learners can investigate, create and think critically with confidence.

As Matt puts it: "We can only do critical thinking with what we know."

Before every gold medal, every cheering crowd, and every iconic victory, there is usually a teacher who saw potential before anyone else did.

On this , we’re sharing the incredible story of Australian Olympic icon Cathy Freeman AC and her primary school teacher, Mrs. Bessie Baldry.

Long before Cathy captivated the world at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, she was a shy young girl hiding during a sports carnival. Mrs. Baldry saw a quiet child who just needed someone to believe she belonged on that start line, and gently coaxed her out onto the track.

That single act of encouragement planted a powerful seed of self-belief.

From running barefoot on sawdust tracks in Queensland to crossing the finish line in green and gold, Cathy carried that inner confidence all the way to her historic 400m gold medal win. She became the first Aboriginal Australian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, bringing an entire nation together.

Teachers don't just teach subjects; they build confidence, inspire dreams, and shape history.
