Meet our Middle Years Team 🤝
The Middle Years are a time of significant growth, challenge and opportunity — and behind every student navigating this journey is a dedicated leadership team guiding and supporting them each day.
Led by Amanda Robertson (Head of Middle Years), alongside Cherie Birch (Head of Year 7), Kate Di Lallo (Head of Year 8) and Ariane Salomone (Head of Year 9), this team plays a vital role across Years 7–9.
From helping students feel a sense of belonging during Orientation Week, supporting them through camps and guiding them as they explore co-curricular opportunities, leadership roles and future pathways, their impact is felt in every part of the Middle Years experience.
Through a strong pastoral care framework and close collaboration with Mentors, wellbeing staff and families, they ensure each girl is supported to build resilience, develop confidence and grow into a capable, independent learner.
Thank you to our Middle Years Leadership Team for the care, expertise and commitment you bring to our community each day 💜👏

🎭✨ Something is coming… ✨🎭
Our recent Production Camp was a fun and productive experience for all involved, with students spending time rehearsing musical numbers, choreography and scenes, making strong progress as they build towards this year’s production.
Alongside the hard work, there was plenty of opportunity for connection, with shared meals, games, singing and dancing creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
Camps like this are not only an important part of the rehearsal process, but also a chance for students to build confidence and create lasting memories together.
We look forward to sharing more soon — with a special announcement coming next week 👀
Stay tuned...

🧠💡 da Vinci Decathlon success for 💡🧠
Our Years 5–10 students recently took part in the da Vinci Decathlon State event — a rigorous academic competition designed to challenge students across 10 diverse disciplines, from Mathematics and Engineering to Ideation and Creative Producers.
Requiring not only subject knowledge but also collaboration, critical thinking and creativity under pressure, the Decathlon is a true test of teamwork and problem-solving. It was fantastic to see our students embrace each challenge with such focus, energy and determination.
Highlights from the three days of competition included:
✨ Year 10 – 2nd overall, with outstanding results across multiple disciplines
✨ Year 9 – 3rd in Mathematics
✨ Year 8 – 3rd overall, including 1st in English
✨ Year 7 – 2nd in Creative Producers
✨ Year 6 – 3rd in Science
✨ Year 5 – 2nd in English
All students represented MLC with enthusiasm, resilience and a willingness to take on complex challenges — which is very much in the spirit of the competition.
Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic effort. Bring on 2027 👏

The evening will begin with a welcome from Principal Rebecca Clarke, followed by keynote speaker Kate Molinari, Founder of Striide, presenting ‘The Strength in Self-Awareness’.
As Kate shares:
“Self-awareness isn’t a personality trait, it’s a skill. And when you pair it with genuine curiosity about others, you become the kind of colleague and educator every school wants.”

From The Collegian Archives 📖✨
Recently, MLC welcomed back Collegians Jenefer Blackwell and Joan Wardrop from the Class of 1965 - prompting a wonderful look back through The Collegian archives at their time as students.
The 1965 editions capture snapshots of a vibrant school life filled with science, music and academic curiosity. Jenefer was recognised for her award-winning Biology project, A Twelve-Month Survey of the Bird Population at Shenton Park Lake, while also featuring prominently throughout the Heather Lamont Festival for her achievements in piano and vocal performance.
Both students have gone on to remarkable careers in academia and research - Jenefer becoming an internationally respected scientist in genetics, infectious diseases and global health, and Joan building a distinguished academic career in history, anthropology and social sciences.
To conclude their recent visit to campus, the pair recreated a photograph taken together in the MLC Science Lab more than 60 years ago - a very special "Then & Now" moment (see the recreation in the last two images) 🧪💜

Creating colour from nature 🌱
From eucalyptus leaves and rust water to silk, calico and linen fabrics, our Year 10 students explored the creative possibilities of natural dyeing during a full-day Materials Design and Technology incursion.
Throughout the workshop, the class was introduced to a range of sustainable textile techniques including silk eco-printing, rust mordanting, tie dye and simple shibori resist methods. They also created their own dye baths from scratch before cooking fabrics in a eucalyptus dye pot and uncovering the unique prints and colour variations developed throughout the process.
The hands-on experience encouraged students to experiment, problem-solve and think creatively while gaining insight into environmentally conscious design practices and the science behind natural dyes.
It was wonderful to see our girls so engaged in the process as they transformed natural materials into beautifully unique textile pieces.

✈️ Canberra Tour on film 📸
Our Year 6 cohort recently returned from their Canberra Tour, which was an enriching experience that brought their classroom learning to life.
Across the week, students explored Australia’s history, government and culture through a range of engaging experiences. Highlights included visits to Parliament House, the High Court, Questacon and the National Gallery, along with meaningful opportunities to reflect at the Australian War Memorial.
The tour also provided valuable opportunities for our girls to build independence, strengthen friendships and develop leadership skills in a new environment.
It was a fantastic week filled with learning, discovery and shared experiences — making it the perfect way to create memories together in one of their final terms in the Junior Years.
