Taken from the NHS England webpage on Help for suicidal thoughts:
"Do not worry about having the answers. Just listening to what someone has to say and taking it seriously can be more helpful."
Turns out Just Listening is seen as quite important 😜 (Even if they didnt quite mean it like that!!).
Now I am imagining what it might be like if people listened here in South Australia, rather than applying risk and professional identity over the wisdom of the individual 🧡

DESCRIPTION:
"In this TWiST highlight, Dr. Mark Horowitz walks through the science of how SSRIs actually affect the brain and why so many people fail to taper off them. The key insight is that going from 5mg to 0mg has roughly 20x the effect on the brain as going from 20mg to 15mg.This means most traditional tapering schedules set patients up to fail. Doctors frequently mistake withdrawal symptoms for relapse which ends up keeping patients on antidepressants longer than necessary. Outro Health is using the 'hyperbolic tapering; method to help patients safely come off these medications."
Mark Horowitz talking about problems of tapering without out understanding the impacts.
“And the final reduction, going from 5 to zero (mg) is like jumping off a cliff. It has about 20 times the effects, of going from 20 to 15 (mg). And so people are repeatedly pushed off this cliff, by the way that doctors recommend coming off and they end up in a screaming mess.”
Here in SA people are routinely reduced of drugs like this over a week, 2 weeks or even just cold turkey. This could be considered medical negligence - controversial statement?
Perhaps compassionate tapering is what we could offer all people.
Perhaps if you are a prescriber (or your prescriber) might consider understanding tapering as part of the prescribing process - if you put someone on a drug you should be confident to take them off it in a suitable safe and compassionate way.

It was a joy to connect with Lewis Mehl Madrona and Barb Mainguy 🧡 Coyote Institute and Sheldon.
It is a great joy to learn from these friends and to share our work with them from Just Listening (Just Listening Australia) and Humane Clinic.
For those interested in what we are actually talking about in the conversation, we move towards exploring ideas of listening and 'therapy from around 14 minutes and just keeps becoming more focussed after that.
Perhaps we are going to see Lewis and Barbara here in 2027 for some workshops🤞
For more of the beautiful and important work hosted and demonstrated by Lewis E Mehl-Madrona these links will take you to a world of treats.
