How a Hunter classroom will offer lessons to the NSW Education Minister

Congratulations to Mr. Andrew Cornwall who has been appointed to the NSW Minister’s Teachers’ Advisory Group. This is in addition to his continuation in his role here at St Bede’s as a HSIE Leader of Learning . Mr. Cornwall is one of fourteen teachers who has been appointed to advise the Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell, on relevant teaching practice matters as a way of bridging the gap between teaching policy and practice. Full article can be found in our recent college newsletter and a feature article in today’s edition of The Newcastle Herald. Congratulations!

NSW TechGirl Team #1 "Skilz". St Bede's participated in the TechGirls competition which combines problem-solving through a social, business and technical lens, producing high-quality business plans, pitch videos and working app prototypes from girls. "Skilz"- created an app prototype which aimed at improving skills for a variety of sporting codes that could be completed from home. The app connected users to local sporting clubs as well as health professionals and healthy eating habits. Thank you to Ms Haines for supporting and driving this opportunity at St Bede's. This week Year 11 Hospitality students developed their Italian culinary skills under the direction of Head Chef Daniel Kibble from Fratelli Roma in Maitland. Daniel spent time talking about his passion and love of food and working in the industry, and his pathway to a career as a chef. Through the morning Daniel also spoke about trends in the industry driven by consumer demand, including sustainable produce and protein and knowing where your food comes from.
Thank you Daniel for your time, inspiration and expertise with our students.
Check out the article in our College Newsletter with more photos and a menu of the great food prepared by Daniel and the students. Fratelli Roma

Food Tech Spotlight Part 1- Recently Year 9 Food Technology students completed their Special Occasions Unit. In the practical lessons leading up to this event students learnt cake decorating skills such as buttercream piping, working with fondant, and making decorations with tempered chocolate. The cakes students produced are a culmination of their own research into techniques they planned to use in their cake designs, practise at home, and practical tutorials at school. Students created their own cake topper, designed to suit their special occasion cake using Adobe Illustrator software which were then laser-cut at the school. The result from our students are spectacular.

St Bede’s submission for the ‘Decorate Your Gate’ Competition was never going to be conventional due to the contemporary, open plan nature of the school. In the absence of a traditional ‘front gate’, the student foyer was selected as the site for our installation where students can view and share ideas about the meaning of the work in relation to Child Protection Week. Please enjoy a selection of our talented artists sharing with you their individual creations for this collaborative art work.

This week, the St Bede’s Catholic College community put the spotlight on child protection by recognising and promoting Child Protection Week.
Our College took part in the competition: ‘Decorate Your Gate.’ Many schools across our Diocese participate in this competition. It requires schools to decorate their school gate, fence or another alternative space in-line with the theme: “Every child, in every community, needs a fair go.” Using some of our amazing artists and teachers, we have put together an installation to symbolise this theme. Each student painted one pair of eyes on a singular wooden board and once all had been completed, we hung them on display on a wall near student services.
Our goal is to showcase the competition slogan, as well as our slogan: “We see you.” This is to show that we see the unique identity of all children, we celebrate differences and talents, and we recognise that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect and include the children in our College community. The school that wins this competition will be awarded with a locally themed mural to be painted by the famous artist, Mitch Revs. Catholic Schools of Maitland-Newcastle Mitch Revs Gallery

Starting to get everything ready for the official opening of the Dominic Building today. Looking forward to having over 50 invited guests back to the college after such a long time. More posts to come over the next few days, celebrating the many wonderful aspects of our St Bede’s community.

Welcome to St Bede’s

Set within the new and growing suburb of Chisholm, St Bede’s Catholic College opened with approximately 110 Year 7 co-educational students in 2018. Since that time, we have expanded by a further two year groups and now have approximately 360 Year 7 to 9 students. We will continue to expand by one year group per calendar year until becoming a full Year 7 to 12 co-educational school in 2023.

Construction of the school is expected to be completed at the start of 2023, where there will be four interconnected contemporary designed buildings equipped to cater for a student population of about 1,100. When completed, St Bede’s will have a large playing field and basketball courts, access to local council playing fields. This and the open design of the College will allow students to enjoy generous outdoor facilities.

St Bede’s two feeder schools are St Aloysius Catholic Primary School, located next door, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Tarro. Many other students come from a wide range of other primary and secondary schools.

St Bede’s is proudly recognised as a faith-based Catholic school; representing the story and traditions of Catholicism; and inter-personally reflecting the core Catholic values of love, justice, truth and compassion. In offering a quality Catholic education, St Bede’s provides the opportunity for staff and students to further deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ. St Bede’s provides students with a unique opportunity to be part of a faith-filled Catholic community committed to high standards, personal best, and service to others.
