Our St Nicholas Early Education Gillieston Heights team got behind Red Nose Day – coming together for a team morning tea to raise awareness for Red Nose’s support programs.

Red Nose Day highlights SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the impacts of SIDS and research going into improving the evidence for best safe sleep practices.

Our team’s morning tea reflected on best practice around safe sleeping for infants and children – something our teams ensure are applied in their roles daily.

The St Nicholas Early Education philosophy states that children are recognised as individuals and are empowered to make their own choices and take ownership of their bodies in their environment.

With that in mind, the 'Payang Payang Room' are starting to introduce a progressive meal time at lunch. This will allow the children to choose when they are hungry, what foods they eat and portion size.

Not only does this help the children feel empowered and in control of their own bodies, but also helps them in preparation for school. Meal times at schools are for a certain time frame, however during this time it is up to the individual child what food they consume and how much.

This will be a gradual introduction into the room as the 'Payang Payang' children are used to group lunch times, but we are sure it will be successful after introducing progressive morning tea earlier in the year. We hope to also introduce a fruit bowl in the room for the children, in case they feel hungry between meals. We would love to hear any feedback you have!

Team 'Payang' went on another adventure this week, this time to visit the waving orange man. The children were all so excited when we made it to the top of the hill and stood there dancing in unison.

On the way back, the children convinced educators it would be a great idea to stop at the park for a play. The stop provided the children the opportunity to use their gross motor skills, problem-solving skills, negotiation skills and resilience.

We are so proud of the 'Payang' children and how well they have been doing in their excursions. Can’t wait for our big excursion to the Hunter Wetlands later on in May.

This morning Miss Selena had a very important job for the 'Payang Payang' children; to deliver a package to St Aloysius that accidentally got to the wrong address.

The children were all so excited to go on their first excursion, they decided they all wanted to come for walk. We put on our super-important hi-vis vests and set off.

This also gave the children the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of 'big school' as part of St Nicholas' Transition to School program!

The children pointed out different plants, insect, signs and buildings to the 'Payang Payang' educators along the way. This interest then lead to the children doing research on the smartboard when they got back - we looked up Chisholm, St Aloysius, and what the suburb looked like just 5 years ago.

We are going to Queensland. Welcome to 'Marapan Airlines'.

Today our pilot, Jono will be taking us direct to the sunny Gold Coast. Fasten your seat belts, you are in for a fun ride! Unfortunately, we ran out of fuel mid air but Grayson and Flynn came to the rescue and topped us up so we could continue on our way.

See you all when we get back!

Following on from the children's interest in movie theatres, last week we created our very own cinema. We practiced our writing skills to create our own movie tickets and money to purchase popcorn and a drink.

After lunch, the children lined up, presented their tickets, purchased some snacks and found their seats for the movie, 'Hop'. There was lots of laughs and excitement, especially as EB destroyed the house and played guitar hero.

This experience has not only provided the children with an opportunity to watch a Easter-time favourite, but also provided the opportunity to use fine motor skills, literacy and numeracy skills, and social skills.

Last night we hosted a professional development evening for St Nicholas educators from all of our local centres. The training was centred around supporting and documenting children in our under 3 years groups.

It was a really informative and inspirational night.
Seeing educators continually learn and build on their skills is something we really value at our centre. We've got some great resources, too!

The 'Tarrin Room' children make music!

Zach enjoyed using the large reel as a drum, banging his hands on it to make sounds. As a follow up, educators Tia, Jess and Jane brought out the musical instruments at group time.

Whilst signing songs, the children used the instruments to create sounds. Exploring each of the musical instruments was a fun way to see how each one was different. The children especially liked the ones that made loud noises.

Sensory play and colour mixing:

Today our 'Puwikun' and 'Kinay' children enjoyed being engaged in a sensory experience using shaving cream and lots of colour.

The children were able to use their hands and fingers to move the cream around and mix the colours as they went.

This was a follow-on from last week when some of the children set up their own finger painting activity with blue paint in our art area!

Harmony Day is about celebrating Australia's cultural diversity. Today the 'Marapan Room' celebrated 'Holi' as part of their Harmony Day activities. This is a Hindu festival known as the 'Festival of Colour'. To celebrate this festival, the children were involved in a mini colour run. You can see from the pictures that they had a fabulous time!
