Exciting news - the All Hands on Deck symposium audio recordings are now available online. So if you missed the symposium in Sydney on 19-21 July 2023, you can now enjoy it at your leisure. All Hands on Deck was a one-of-a-kind symposium – it was intensely cross-disciplinary, and filled with generative discussion and collegiate support for everyone researching issues of work, skill, transitions, design and sustainability, in the context of climate change.

So heartening to see the diversity & number of abstracts we received for . We've been inundated with amazing proposals from a number of different disciplines and ways of thinking.
As co-Convenors, Chantel Carr & I have a lot of work to do to figure out how all this will gel & become coherent, but it's fun work!

All Hands on Deck Convenor Dr Chantel Carr recently published this paper in Dialogues in Human Geography, based on 10 yrs fieldwork in energy-intensive sectors. Well worth a read! - and a great way to get into some of the themes we will be covering during the symposium

The "Call for Papers" for All Hands on Deck is still open. There's still time to write a proposal for a spoken paper (and potentially a book chapter if you'd like to be included in the book too!) https://allhandsondeck2023.com/call-for-papers/
With the cumulative impacts of the changing climate, the ongoing pandemic, and tense geopolitical circumstances impacting all aspects of life, self-sufficiency and local resilience are all increasingly vital. In this context, human and environmental survival will partly depend on nation states to act together, but also on people’s skilful capacity to care and repair – individually and collectively.
What kinds of (paid and unpaid) work are genuinely needed for the future, and what sorts of skills would this require? Is there a disconnect between the types of work and training available, and the types of skills and capacities that will be needed in the future?
Contributions are invited that relate to, but need not be constricted by, the following themes:
- The labour of care and repair
- Technical skill and material knowledge
- Craft and small-scale production
Please send a title, abstract (300 words) and a bio (100 words) to [email protected] by 25 July 2022.

Welcome! This page will be used to circulate extra information about the "All Hands on Deck" symposium to be held at UTS Sydney in July 2023. It will also chart the production of the book publication to follow the event. Just to clear up any misunderstanding, All Hands on Deck not an "educational research centre" as Facebook says it is, it's an academic symposium and book project. But this was one of the only options that kind of fitted pre-set Facebook categories.
This page will group together symposium events, once the schedule is released.
