In this International Archives Week, we highlight snapshots of our old Bird Lover magazine from the 1940s and 1950s.
A wonderful publication that published observations and reflections on native bird populations and their needs recorded by Gould League members including bird watching clubs, schools and students.
It's an absolute treasure trove of old world citizen science.

Every year, students were selected from different schools in Melbourne to take part in a special Gould League bird count at a property in Toolern Vale. They monitored nesting sites, took photos, and drew pictures. A summary was published in the magazine detailing their discoveries.

Imagine the thrill of having your paintings published in colour for all the other readers to see. This was 50 years before social media!

This week is National Volunteer Week and 2026 is the UN year of Volunteering.

So we'd love you to meet our newest Volunteer Grants Coordinator Caitlyn!

Caitlyn joined Gould League in February supporting us by applying for funding to meet project, resource and operational needs.
Currently studying a Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment, she was eager to gain hands‑on experience and jumped at the chance to volunteer with such an iconic organisation.

The role has offered valuable insight into both the educational and business sides of the organisation while contributing to a cause she cares deeply about. In just a few months, she’s enjoyed meeting the passionate Gould League team and appreciating their wide range of expertise.

Her care for the environment began with littering being the first issue that sparked her commitment. Today, she’s especially concerned about the recent algal blooms in South Australia, and consequences for ecosystems and communities.

Her advice to start volunteering?
Council websites can be a great place to look for local volunteering opportunities for council and other local groups

Favourite species: the Magpie — underrated, iconic, and a beautiful warbly singer.
