🎉 Good news! Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning • Sydney Taiwanese School is giving away Horse-Year lanterns for the Lantern Festival!
🏮 Why Do People Carry Lanterns During the Lantern Festival?
The Lantern Festival (celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month) is also known as the “Festival of Lights”, as it is traditionally marked by lantern displays, hanging lanterns and carrying lanterns.
This tradition can be traced back to the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Ming of Han, who promoted Buddhism, an order was given to light lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month as an offering to the Buddha. Over time, this practice spread from the imperial court to the wider public and gradually developed into a grand and vibrant festival of lights.
By the Tang and Song dynasties, Lantern Festival celebrations had become even more elaborate. People would go out in the evening to admire the lantern displays, and children would carry lanterns as they walked through the streets. As a result, carrying lanterns became one of the most distinctive traditions of the festival.
During the Lantern Festival, lanterns are more than simply sources of light — they carry rich symbolic meanings:
🔴 Red lanterns symbolise joy and reunion.
🏮 Decorative lanterns represent wisdom and creativity.
✨ Lighting lanterns signifies driving away misfortune and welcoming good fortune.
In addition, activities such as solving lantern riddles enhance the festive atmosphere, making lanterns an important symbol that brings together culture, entertainment and good wishes.
Carrying lanterns symbolises light, hope and togetherness, expressing people’s wishes for a bright and prosperous new year.
