🌳Year 9 iSTEM: Urban Green
As part of the Year 9 iSTEM topic Localised Food Production, students have been learning about alternative and sustainable farming methods. Students visited an underground microgreens farm in Barangaroo, called Urban Green. Here, students were able to learn about how the farm operates, what types of plants they grow and how hydroponics systems work. They were lucky enough to be able to plant their own microgreens to take home. Students also tasted these in the growing room, as well as working as a team to build a fully functioning hydroponics shelving system.
We thank Ms. Zahra and Ms. Chaggar for their leadership of this experience.

💙🧡Strength, Inspiration and Hope with Uncle Terry and Uncle Bobby. This was one of the most powerful and historic learning experiences at Chatswood High School.
Chatswood High School had the profound honour of welcoming Uncle Terry and Uncle Bobby, survivors of Kinchela Boys Home and members of the Stolen Generations. Their courage and generosity made this one of the most powerful days of learning in our school.
Students also heard the voices of former Kinchela Boys Home survivors through a short video. Their words were confronting, heartbreaking and powerful:
“I was eight years old when they took me.”
“I was ten.”
“I was six years old.”
“I was five.”
“They said my parents did not want me anymore.”
“He told me my parents were dead.”
“The government thinks we were taken because we were neglected… and it’s all lies because I had a good life with my family. I was not neglected.”
“And then they said I didn’t have a name. I was a number.”
Hearing these voices and then hearing directly from Uncle Terry and Uncle Bobby reminded us why truth telling matters, why reconciliation matters, and why education is a pathway to a brighter future for all.
Uncle Terry’s and Uncle Bobby’s message to our students was simple and powerful. Your education is your strength. Your choices can help build a more just Australia.
Uncle Terry’s and Uncle Bobby’s willingness to revisit painful memories so young people can learn and grow has made us all more aware, more compassionate and more committed to walking together.
We thank Ms. Kamal Kaur Head Teacher Student Excellence and Engagement Stage 4 for coordinating this important event, our student leaders for their participation, and our students for their respectful engagement. We thank Deputy Principal Mr Boogert for his powerful reflections on visiting Kinchela Boys Home.
Chatswood High School is deeply grateful to Uncle Terry and Uncle Bobby.
Thank you to Mr. Harry Ma for capturing this historic moment for our community. Your photographs beautifully reflect the power and humanity of this day.
