There are 4 things AI cannot replicate:

๐Ÿ”น Human trust and connection - rapport cannot be automated.
๐Ÿ”น Nuanced presence - picking up on tone, hesitation, or what is left unsaid.
๐Ÿ”น Adaptive intuition - knowing when to pause, pivot, or dig deeper.
๐Ÿ”น Contextual knowledge - the history, relationships and experiences of the people in our classes, teams, staff or organisations.

AI will be part of and moving forward - it is already assisting with note-taking and summarising sessions, tracking goals and action plans, and suggesting reflective questions or frameworks.

Coaching platforms with embedded AI can suggest questions, summarise conversations, and prompt next steps. Some are impressive and helpful, but they are not human.

In that difference lies the heart of coaching and mentoring, and three things coaches and mentors are now called to bring even more deeply:

๐Ÿค Emotional resonance - being the calm, empathetic presence AI cannot be. People do not just want reflection, they also want to be seen.
๐ŸŒฑ Ethical wisdom - AI can offer answers, whereas leaders and learners often need someone to help them weigh values, tension, and context. That is a human craft.
โš–๏ธ Curated judgment. AI pulls from everything, yet a coach pulls from what matters - insight shaped by experience, trust, and knowing the learner in front of them.

Many school leaders are already beginning to conceptualise and initiate coaching cultures because they see the benefits for sustainability and way of working. But what does a coaching culture actually look like in practice?

Munro, Barr, and van Nieuwerburgh (2020) define this as a whole-school coaching culture for learning.

At its core, coaching is framed as a conversation - a particular kind of conversation, intentionally managed and skilfully held.

A coaching culture extends these conversations beyond formal coaching cycles and into the everyday rhythms of school life.

The authors map these conversational contexts using the Global Framework for Coaching and Mentoring in Education, which identifies four domains where coaching approaches can be applied:
๐Ÿ”น Educational Leadership
๐Ÿ”น Professional Practice
๐Ÿ”น Student Experience
๐Ÿ”น Community Engagement

At the heart of the framework sits student success and wellbeing - the purpose that connects all four domains.

This view is embedded in the wider literature on school cultures, as well as the emerging field of building a coaching culture.

A coaching culture, then, is not a single initiative but a way of working that develops over time.

Today we look back at this episode of Coaching in Education Podcast where host Richard Reid is joined by Dr Adrian Camm, Principal of Westbourne Grammar in Melbourne.

Adrian discusses the schoolโ€™s journey in embedding coaching across staff and leadership - sharing the wins, the challenges and the profound impact coaching has had on communication, collaboration and student wellbeing.

Managing Challenging Conversations supports leaders to grow the capacity of themselves and others to work through complex situations in a way that results in better relationships and outcomes for all ๐Ÿค
