If your child has ever taken apart a toy just to see how it works β VEX IQ robotics might be exactly what they've been waiting for. π§
VEX IQ is a global robotics competition program for school-age kids. Students design, build, and program their own robots entirely from scratch β then put them to the test in real tournaments. The competition pathway runs from local and regional events all the way to the World Championship in the United States, and yes, Australian kids genuinely make it there.
In fact, our team at Sydney Robotics Academy was the first Australian team in history to win the VEX Robotics World Championship. π That's not something we say lightly β it's proof that with the right coaching, kids from Sydney can compete and win on the world stage.
Here's what we hear most from parents: βMy child isn't really a maths or tech kid, is this right for them?β The honest answer is that VEX IQ isn't just for one type of kid. It rewards creativity, persistence, and teamwork just as much as technical skill. We've seen all kinds of children discover a passion they didn't know they had.
We're hosting a VEX IQ Info Workshop on Saturday 24 May at our Chatswood studio β designed specifically for families who are curious but don't know where to begin. Come and meet our coaches, see the robots up close, and ask every question you have. No experience needed, no commitment required.

Big ask, small effort π
We're trying to get nominated for a Local Business Award β and we need votes to make it through the first round. If SRA has been part of your child's journey, a quick vote would mean the world to us. It takes 30 seconds and genuinely makes a difference at this stage.

For VEX competition teams in Sydney β and the parents supporting them. π
Your child has a team. They've been putting in the hours β building, coding, strategising. But as competition season approaches, a lot of teams hit the same wall: they're working hard, but not sure if they're working on the right things.
And often, the students themselves can feel it. They know something's off with the robot design, or the match strategy isn't clicking β but they don't have the outside perspective to fix it.
That's exactly what SRA's private competition coaching is designed to address.
Each session is tailored to what your team actually needs: a full robot design review, programming optimisation, match simulation, driver skills training, or game-play run-throughs against realistic scenarios. We schedule around your competition calendar so your team peaks at exactly the right moment β regionals, state rounds, or nationals.
Our coaches built Australia's first-ever VEX World Champion team in 2021. They've seen what the top teams do differently and know where most teams leave points on the table β knowledge that only comes from having competed at the highest level.
Sessions are intentionally kept small. Every team gets focused, personalised attention β not a generic programme.
Whether you're a student looking to push your team further, or a parent wanting to give your child the best shot at qualifying β we'd love to chat.

In 2021, a team of students from Chatswood did something no Australian team had ever done before β they won the VEX Robotics World Championship. π¦πΊπ
Competing against 20,000+ students from over 60 countries, SRA's Team 988A took home the title. It wasn't a fluke. It was the result of years of structured training, expert coaching, and a program built specifically around competition excellence.
Since then, SRA teams have continued to qualify and compete at the national level year after year. And the coaches behind those results? They're still here β still training the next generation of competitors right here in Sydney.
That reputation is why schools like Knox Grammar, The King's School, SHORE, Wenona trust SRA to coach their competition teams. When Sydney's top schools want results, they come to us.
Whether your child is already competing or just starting to explore robotics, this is the team to train with.

Did you know there's a robotics competition that's bigger than most international sports tournaments β and Australia has already produced a World Champion?
The VEX Robotics World Championship brings together over 20,000 students from 60+ countries every year. It's widely considered the Olympics of student robotics, and qualifying isn't easy. Teams must fight through regional, state, and national rounds just to earn a spot on the world stage.
What makes it matter beyond the competition itself? Schools notice. Universities remember.
From selective high schools and elite independent schools to university scholarship panels β a strong VEX competition record signals exactly the kind of student they're looking for. In Australia, it's already on the radar of schools that care about more than just grades.
And here in Sydney, it's already been done. In 2021, SRA's Team 988A β based right here in Chatswood β became the first Australian team in history to win the VEX Robotics World Championship.
Whether your child is just starting out in robotics or already thinking about competition, the pathway to the world stage is closer than you think.

π¦πΊ Sydney kids on the world stage β and we couldn't be prouder.
The 2026 VEX Robotics World Championship is underway in the USA, and Knox Grammar's robotics team is there β with SRA coaches right alongside them.
If you've never heard of VEX Worlds, here's why it's a big deal: it holds a Guinness World Record as the largest robotics competition on Earth, with teams from over 70 countries competing every year. This isn't a local tournament or a regional qualifier. This is the pinnacle of student robotics β and only the very best teams in the world make it through.
This team didn't just get lucky. They earned their spot the hard way:
β
Multiple awards at the NSW State Championship (November 2025)
π Australian National Champion title (December 2025)
π« Official qualification for the 2026 VEX World Championship
Our SRA coaches are in Dallas this week wearing two hats β volunteering in the event operations (because our coaches don't just train teams, they help run the world's biggest robotics events) and providing on-the-ground support for Knox every step of the way.
For us, moments like this are what it's all about. We spend our weeks in Chatswood coaching curious kids β some who've never touched a robot before β and watching them grow into students who can genuinely compete on a global stage. That journey matters.
To the Knox Grammar team: the whole SRA community is behind you. Go get 'em. πͺπ€

Sydney parents, after the Easter break, itβs time to get your kids thinking! π§
Today weβre sharing a few questions from the past CAT Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition.
CAT is not a coding test β it focuses on logical thinking and algorithmic thinking, with no coding required.
There are questions for different year levels, from Year 5 to Year 12 β including one easier question and one challenge question.
π€―Only 10% of students can solve the challenge question.
Think your child can do it? Give it a try!

Coding is just the start. The best robotics programs build lifelong learning habits and a problem-solving mindset that empower students far beyond the screen. When kids learn how to learn, they gain skills that last a lifetime and open doors to endless possibilities in STEM and beyond.
