Visit Charters Towers, North Queensland
HOWZZZAAATT!!!!...
In 1948 the concept of a cricket carnival in Charters Towers was established and on Australia Day weekend 1949, 8 teams arrived to play in the first Goldfield Ashes Cricket Carnival. Bringing people together from far & wide, ‘The Ashes’, as it is affectionately known, is the largest amateur cricket carnival in the Southern Hemisphere, with nearly 250 teams from A grade through to social grade playing cricket in our region.
I wonder when that last game was played in 1949, did the organisers & players think that the tradition would continue to become such an iconic event over 70 years later?
