We practise the WT (World Taekwondo) style. My name is Ashlee Ward and I am the head instructor for the Charters Towers based branch of Edge Taekwondo.

Edge Taekwondo is a friendly club in the Jidokwan tradition which teaches a balance of the best traditional techniques, practical self-defence, and modern competition strategies. I am a 4th dan black belt. I started training taekwondo at the age of 6 on the Gold Coast and have successfully competed at a State and National level for both poomse and sparring. I also opened the Upper Coomera branch o

Gold Coast Open – today ✔️

Big day all round 🥋
Josie’s first black belt fight — tough opponent and super quick, but she settled in heaps better in round 2 💪

Jackson (now Brisbane based 🙄) went down 2–1 but fought well…
and got the honour of presenting him with his Kukkiwon 1st Dan certificate 👊 proud moment

Recovery plan after that…
$7 steak sandwiches at Hogs Breath 😂 unreal

And of course… back to Yochi for more (cookie dough again 🍪🍦)

Good fights, good moments, even better food 👌

🖤 BLACK BELT MILESTONE 🖤

This post is a special one.

In December, Josie officially graded to her Black Belt, becoming my first junior black belt at Edge Taekwondo Charters Towers. And today, Jackson joined her, grading to his Black Belt as well.

These two have trained with me since I opened Edge Taekwondo Charters Towers in 2021. Josie was just 7 years old when she walked through the doors, and Jackson was 11.

Both started out shy, quiet, and unsure of themselves. Watching their growth over the years has been nothing short of incredible.

Jackson came to me barely saying more than a one-word answer. Today, he’s a confident (and sometimes cheeky 😏) young man who trains independently at home, constantly pushing himself to improve. He competes as often as his parents’ bank account will allow and, in 2025, became the National Champion in the Red Belt Junior Division.

Josie also started out quiet and reserved. She has grown into a confident and sometimes sassy young lady who isn’t afraid to back herself. She competes whenever she can and became National Champion in the Youth Blue Belt Division in 2023.

Over the years we’ve spent countless hours together — on planes, at competitions, on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane — and just as many hours fundraising. From sausage sizzles and bake sales to raffles and money boards, these two (and their families) have always shown up and put in the work.

Not only are Josie and Jackson my first two black belts, but their families have become my good friends.

Since I moved to Townsville, their continued commitment has meant the world to me. They’ve kept training, kept showing up, and made the effort to travel to Townsville for extra sessions — true dedication to their journey.

I also want to give a massive shout-out to their parents. Your support over the years has been incredible. You’ve done everything possible to help your kids achieve what they have, and you’ve also supported me and the club whenever needed. I’m so grateful for your friendship and belief.

A special mention to Clancy, who has taken over running classes in Charters Towers for the past two years. The kids truly look up to him, and this achievement would not have been possible without his guidance, support, and consistency.

Finally, a huge thank you to Neil, our Brisbane coach, who stepped in last year while I was going through the Police Academy. Neil coached both Josie and Jackson at Nationals, and his experience and support played a big role in their continued development and success.

I am unbelievably proud of you both.
Black belt is just the beginning — and I can’t wait to see where your journeys go next 🖤🥋
