The English alphabet has 26 letters (graphemes) that make 44 sounds (phonemes). This means that some letters make more than 1 sound. To make it even more complicated some sounds have more than one grapheme. But there's more! 1 grapheme can be 1, 2, 3 or even 4 letters long. AND there is 1 grapheme, 'ough', that represents 6 phonemes.
SO YOU WONDER WHY SOME PEOPLE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO READ AND WRITE?????
