Hello Everyone!

We’ve been on a bit of a hiatus, but we are back and better than ever.

Our current climate has forced us to educate through online, which I don’t think is necessarily a bad way to learn, but I expect many students will fall behind without extra attention.

We have a ton of employees that can help a tremendous amount; we have tutors for all grades, all subjects, and can differentiate for all types of learners (SWD, ELL, etc.).

If you or anyone you know is in need of a tutor, please reach out.

Since we are all under quarantine, we can absolutely do online meetings.

Part 2 of the ozone layer:

Lastly, we’d like to discuss the ozone hole — a seasonal reduction of ozone (over Antarctica) that is caused by CFCs. Each year, normally beginning in late August or early September, the amount of ozone in the atmosphere, over Antarctica, begins to decrease, creating a giant hole, and by December, this hole disappears. Over the last 50 years, the ozone hole has changed a great deal — in present day, the ozone hole starts to form in early May, instead of September, has extended in size, and started to change formation. These current differences have come about because of Earth’s populations using more and more items that emit carbon-based molecules into our atmosphere. I know what everyone is thinking, “why don’t we just stop using or use less of these things?” — the answer is, we do use less, thanks to certain environmental laws, but there are 7 billion people on the planet, and most countries still depend on non-renewable energy sources. Let’s see how the ozone changes in the next 50 years — we hope it’s only in a positive way! 🐦🌎

Part 1 of the ozone layer:

Today is the last segment of our atmosphere segment... Thank you to everyone who has been tuning in.

First thing we will discuss today is the ozone layer. The ozone layer is a sub layer within the Stratosphere. This sub layer is made up of a high concentration of ozone molecules — an ozone molecules is made up of three oxygen atoms bound together. These ozone molecules shields Earth, and those who inhabit it, from the Sun’s harmful energy. Ozone absorbs most of the Ultraviolet (UV) radiation that enters the atmosphere. UV radiation is one of the many types of energy that comes to Earth from the Sun — too much exposure to it can lead to complications, such as cancer. *SWIPE*

Next thing to discuss are Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — they are important because there has been a multitude of research that believes it is part of the reason for the degradation of the ozone layer. CFCs are chemical compounds that are used in household items and appliances (such as: refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosol sprays, and foam packaging). These compounds enter our atmosphere when they are discarded improperly. So the question is, how do these chlorofluorocarbons destroy the ozone layer? Well, it’s quite simple. CFCs destroy ozone molecules by getting close to them — UV rays break apart the CFCs (which are made up of chlorine, carbon, and fluorine atoms) and the chlorine atoms travel around, attaching to one of the oxygen atoms within ozone, thus pulling them away from the other two oxygen atoms, which creates Cl-O molecules and a O2 molecules, both, which cannot block UV radiation. Because of this, more of the Sun’s harmful rays enter the Earth’s surface. 🐦🌎 *Check our our other post to learn about the ozone hole*

Atmospheric Pressure and Temperature - Part 2

If you may not know, the Sun provides Earth with most of its energy. Before it reaches Earth’s surface, it must pass through its atmosphere. Because some layers of the atmosphere contain gases that easily absorb the Sun’s energy, while others do not, each layer’s temperature varies.

Molecules that make up the Troposphere are warmed mostly by the heat of the Earth’s surface (which becomes warm from the sun) — Every kilometer you travel upward, within the Troposphere, temperature decreases.

Molecules of ozone, within the Stratosphere, absorb some of the Sun’s thermal energy, thus raising the temperature — since there are more ozone molecules at the upper part of the Stratosphere, the temperature increases with altitude.

The temperature within the Mesosphere, much like the Troposphere, decreases with altitude. The Thermosphere and Exosphere are the first layers to receive the Sun’s rays, and although there are very few molecules, they have a great deal of energy, so temperatures are very high.

Atmospheric Pressure and Temperature - Part 1:

We hope everyone is having a wonderful Tuesday — we are, because we are continuing with our atmosphere unit!

Today, we discussed two important factors when dealing with Earth’s atmosphere, pressure and temperature.

When thinking of atmospheric pressure, one can imagine a quarterback holding a football, and getting tackled by two linemen, and eventually being dog piled. In this scenario, who is experiencing more weight, the quarterback (who is on the bottom of the pile) or the lineman (who is on the top of the pile)? Anyone who has even been a part of a dog pile knows that the answer is the quarterback. The atmosphere works the same way — the closer to the Earth’s surface the more pressure.

At this point, you may ask yourself “why?” Since the Earth’s core has a gravitational pull, all the molecules on and around Earth gets pulled toward the surface. As these gas molecules, within the atmosphere, get pulled downward and press on the molecules below them. This concept supports that the gas molecules that are closer to Earth’s surface much more dense — when molecules come closer together the become more dense. This dense air exerts more force than the air at the top of the atmosphere — more force and more collisions, within a specific area, creates pressure. Like the pile of football players, air pressure is greater towards the Earth’s surface and is less farther away from the surface.

Today is another atmospheric day! We discussed the next two layers of Earth’s atmosphere, the Thermosphere and the Exosphere.

The Thermosphere the layer above the Mesosphere. This atmospheric layer is named because of its high temperatures (the prefix “thermo” means temperature) — depending on altitude, the temperature of the Thermosphere ranges from 200 °C (360 °F) to 2000 °C (3632 °F). Even though there are extremely hot temperatures, a human being would be extremely cold within this layer because there aren’t enough gas molecules to transfer heat to them. The Thermosphere is the second thickest layer of the atmosphere, and is found between 85 kilometers and 500 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. This layer is also Home to the International Space Station.

The Ionosphere (which was previously discussed last week) extends from the top of the Mesosphere, throughout the entire length of the Thermosphere, and to part of the Exosphere. The Ionosphere allows radio waves to travel across the country to other cities. During the day, the energy from the Sun interacts with the particles in the Ionosphere, causing them to absorb AM radio frequencies. At night, without solar energy, AN radio transmissions reflect off the Ionosphere, allowing radio transmissions to be received at greater distances.

The Exosphere is the outer most layer of the Earth’s atmosphere — it separates the rest of the atmosphere from outer space. This layer is approximately 10,000 km thick (which is almost as wide as earth itself). Within the Exosphere, there are gases like Hydrogen and Helium, but these gases are spread far apart, which is why the wings of a space shuttle are useless when they enter this atmospheric layer — these shuttles depend on bursts from small rocket thrusters to move around. Since there is a lot of empty space between gas molecules, within the Exosphere, there is no air to breathe, and it is extremely cold. 🐦🛩 @ International Space Station

Today was another atmospheric day — we discussed two more layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, the Stratosphere, and the Mesosphere.

The Stratosphere is the layer directly above the Troposphere — it extends from the top of the Troposphere (which is 10-20 km above the Earth’s surface) to about 50 km above the Earth’s surface. Within this atmospheric layer, there is a sub layer, known as the Ozone Layer, which protects the Earth from the Sun’s harmful rays.

The Mesosphere is the middle of Earth’s atmospheric layers (the prefix meso- originates from the Greek word “mesos” which means middle), and extends about 85 km above Earth’s surface. If you have thever seen a shooting star, you have probably witnessed a meteor burning up in the Mesosphere—there are many gases within the Mesosphere that collide with the particles of meteors to create pressure, friction, and heat. Within this layer of the atmosphere, there is a sub layer, known as the Ionosphere, which deals with radio waves and auroras (but we will talk about that in the future, when discussing our next atmospheric layer). 🐦☄️ @ Stratosphere

Today, we discussed the first layer of Earth’s atmosphere, the Troposphere. This layer should be familiar to everyone, because this is where all of our eating, sleeping, playing, and traveling is done! The Troposphere extends an upward distance of approximately 10-20 kilometers from the Earth’s surface. This atmospheric layer contains 99% of the atmosphere’s water v***r and 75% of the atmosphere’s gases — because of this, all of the Earth’s weather happens within this layer. 🐦🌦
