Thought this was a great explainer of convergent evolution, and just how far apart echinas are from hedgehogs, and marsupial moles are from true/placental moles.

On Desert Discovery the tracking team have a very systematic approach to their surveys. Its a method adopted because it is consistant with how other groups survey arid zones in Australia, which allows all the data to be comparable.

Episode 6 of season 6, all about the tracking team on Desert Discovery Inc. Its available to listen on your podcast app or at the Saltgrass website, which also has links and a full transcript.

Did you know that echidna poo sometimes sparkles?! Its from all the ants and beetles they eat.

The tracking team on Desert Discovery systematically covers the ground, searching for all the clues left behind by animals, like s**t (sparkely or otherwise), prints, and burrows.

After just one day with them I have become so much more aware of signs left behind by our ecological community every time I go for a walk.

Episode 6 of the Desert Discovery series is now out. Find it on your podcast app or at the Saltgrass website, where there are links and a full transcript too.

On the third day of Desert Discovery Jeremy saw something odd. He went over to investigate, there were burrow entrances and mounds of red soil. Could it be bilbies?!? We had all been briefed about them, no matter which team you were on. They are a rare, burrowing marsupial, that looks a little like a rabbit. Over the next few days several teams got involved, analysing the site and any evidence we could find.

Listen to Episode 5 'Long Shots', to find out if it really was bilbies. Find it on your podcast app or on the Saltgrass website, where there is also a full transcript and links.

No matter what team you were on, everyone on Desert Discovery Inc. was told to keep an eye out for these rare and unlikely species or what they may have left for us to find in the landscape.
