An Incredible Few Days at the DNBK Japan / World Butoku Sai
Jason has just come through a couple of big and memorable days at the DNBK Japan / World Butoku Sai. This prestigious event was attended primarily by Japanese-based martial arts organisations, with international representation from the USA, Germany and Australia.

The formalities began with the opening banquet dinner. The following day marked the start of the Butoku Sai itself. In the morning, we had the privilege of watching junior and youth demonstrations. Many of these young martial artists were outstanding—displaying focus, discipline, and attention to detail well beyond their years.

The afternoon then became a true martial arts smorgasbord, featuring demonstrations of Karate, Jujutsu, Iaido, Aikido, tameshigiri (sword cutting), a wide range of traditional Okinawan weapons, and even Japanese archery.

Australia proudly demonstrated Karate, Jujutsu, Jodo (short staff), Iaido and Kobudo across all of our enbu (demonstrations). Everything ran smoothly, and our representatives performed exceptionally well. The event concluded with awards and formal presentations, where the Australian group achieved outstanding results:

• Hanshi Kevin Walsh (DNBK Australian Representative) received the Governor of DNBK Award. (The Governor of DNBK is a cousin of the Japanese Emperor.)
• Kyoshi Leanne Walsh received the Commending Individual Award.
• The Australian team received the Outstanding Team Award.

An incredible achievement for everyone involved.

I have a few more days here in Japan before heading home and will be ready to return to training on 12 May.

It was an honour to take part and to stand alongside some very esteemed martial artists!!!

A very big thank you to Hanshi Kevin and Kyoshi Leanne for organising another great day!

What a fantastic day at the Filipino Martial Arts Workshop Run by Kacey Chong and Hosted at Southern Cross Martial Arts Ballarat 🗡️

Six of our Omoikiri Budo Kai students had the opportunity to attend and absolutely loved it. The workshop, focused on the art of Filipino knife-fighting, was incredibly well-run by Kacey, who created a welcoming and structured environment that made learning both enjoyable and effective. From solo and partner drills to light knife sparring, the day was packed with practical skills and great energy.

A big thank you to the organisers for such a smooth, professional event — we can’t wait for the next one! 👊🔥
