Winters Flat Primary School - Castlemaine

Winters Flat Primary School - Castlemaine Learn about our beautiful regional primary school! Winters Flat Primary School is located on the western side of Castlemaine on an attractively landscaped site.

We offer P-6 aligned to the Victorian Curriculum, as well as the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program 🥦🍎, PE ⚽️, Performing and Visual Arts 🪩🎵🎨, French 🇫🇷, chess♟️ and more… 🌈 The spacious 7 acre grounds are within sight of the natural features surrounding Forest Creek. The school provides a natural, traffic free environment in what remains an urban area. As well as classrooms, our school ha

s a purpose built library, Art/Craft room, a converted multi-purpose gym, performing arts area, and a commercial kitchen with decking. Winters Flat Primary School offers a Prep to Grade 6 program in all aspects of VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards). The emphasis of our program is in providing experiences for the children based on their stage of development and previous learning. To support this approach, the class groups are structured to cater for a range of ages and abilities while the learning experiences integrate the subject areas with an emphasis on involving children in practical activities. Programs are co-ordinated on a department and whole school basis, in order to ensure continuity of experiences for children throughout their seven years of primary schooling at Winters Flat. The teaching staff is mostly organised in teams – Junior, Senior and Specialists. The grouping of teachers facilitates the implementation of a well planned and consistent education program. The home group programs are supported by Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Library, French and Chess. To support these programs Winters Flat has developed a comprehensive pupil welfare/behaviour management plan. This is emphasised through the school's commitment to "Achieving Success Together".

Way back in 2024 we started a project to replace one of our food garden area with water-wise, more occupationally safe and accessible wicking beds.

The new garden demonstrates our ongoing commitment to food literacy and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation program.

A big thanks to Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Grants Program. Without your support this wouldn’t have happened.

Wararak and Gurruk time (Jul-Aug) is in full swing and P/1DG recently took their new 5/6 Cobbers on a bush walk together learn about each other and the features of this season.

P/1DG discuss the weather every day as part of their morning routine, so the collaborative poster made by all the Cobbers is a lovely addition to their classroom.

These beautiful “stitched drawings” are the culmination of the last few weeks of Grade 2/3 Art. First, we looked at the textile artwork of First Nations artist, Marlene Rubuntja, focusing on her use of colour to depict her local birds. Students chose a creature local to our creek from a collection of images, before sketching them. After learning to thread needles, tie knots and perform running stitches, they progressed to recreating their drawings in sewn form, with wool and hessian.

Our Grade 5/6 students travelled to Castlemaine Secondary College today to experience a Year 7 Science class. After the CSC tour and questions, students donned lab coats and safety gear to conduct their experiment. 🧪

All were warmly greeted by ex-WFPS students and CSC staff. Experiencing a class in a purpose-built science lab classroom was fascinating and a great opportunity to be introduced to life at secondary school.
