🥋 What Can a Martial Arts Stance Teach Us About Life?

This is Pu Bu (仆步), also known as the Drop Stance—one of the fundamental stances of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu.

Although it may look like just another stance, performing it well requires much more than flexibility.

It develops balance, strength, mobility, focus and patience. 💪

That’s one of the reasons we spend so much time mastering the fundamentals.

In martial arts, it’s easy to become excited about learning advanced techniques.

But real progress begins by mastering the basics.

Every stance, every movement and every repetition lays another brick in the foundation. 🧱

The same is true in life.

Strong character isn’t built through one big decision.

It’s built through the small choices we make every day—turning up, listening, doing our best and continually striving to improve. 🌱

At Hills Academy of Martial Arts, we’re not just teaching students how to move.

We’re helping them become the best version of themselves—one lesson, one repetition and one step at a time. 🙏

🥋 Master the fundamentals. Everything else is built upon them.

🥋 Wu Bu Quan 五步拳 – Foundation of Kung Fu

Wu Bu Quan, or Five Stance Form, is an important beginner’s form that every student can benefit from. 💪

Wu Bu Quan introduces the 5 fundamental stances of Kung Fu:
1. 弓步 (Gōng Bù) — 🏹 Bow Stance
2. 马步 (Mǎ Bù) — 🐎 Horse Stance
3. 歇步 (Xiē Bù) — ✖️ Rest Stance (also commonly translated as Cross Stance)
4. 仆步 (Pū Bù) — ⬇️ Drop Stance (also called Crouching Stance)
5. 虚步 (Xū Bù) — ⚖️ Empty Stance

These stances form the foundation of Shaolin Kung Fu, developing balance, stability, coordination, and strong body mechanics. 🥋

“You can only build as high up as your foundation is deep.” 🏯

🥋 Weapons training is another important part of Kung Fu.

In this session, our students are developing their skills with short sticks (Kali sticks), improving coordination, timing, control and precision through structured drills. 🥢

Weapons training isn’t just about learning how to use a weapon—it’s about developing faster reactions, better footwork, stronger focus, improved hand-eye coordination and greater awareness. 🧠

These skills transfer directly into empty-hand Kung Fu and everyday life. 🔥

Every training tool has a purpose. Every lesson builds a stronger foundation. 💪

🥋 Every great martial artist starts with the basics.

At Hills Academy of Martial Arts, we believe strong fundamentals build strong students.

The techniques may look simple, but every stance, punch and movement develops balance, coordination, discipline and confidence that carries into every stage of training.

A strong foundation creates long-term success.

🥋 Shaolin Chu Ji Chang Quan (少林初级长拳)

Shaolin Chu Ji Chang Quan, or Shaolin Beginner Long Fist, is one of the foundational forms taught in traditional Shaolin Kung Fu.

Students learn essential skills including: • Strong stances
• Coordinated footwork
• Correct body mechanics
• Powerful striking techniques
• Balance and flexibility
• Focus and discipline

While it is considered a beginner form, mastering these fundamentals is an important step in developing good Kung Fu.
Every advanced technique is built upon these basic principles.

As the saying goes:
“You can only build as high as your foundation is deep.” 🥋

🥋 Martial arts has always been about learning, sharing, and growing together. 🤝

Last night we had the pleasure of welcoming JKA Castle Hill Karate to our academy for a special training exchange.

It was a fantastic evening of sharing techniques, refining fundamentals, and learning from one another.

Sensei Robin guided us through the precision and detail behind Karate’s core techniques, while we shared some of our own foundational Shaolin Kung Fu training methods and movements from Xiao Hong Quan (小洪拳).

It was inspiring to see how many similarities exist between our two styles—not only in the techniques, but also in the philosophy, discipline, and respect that underpin traditional martial arts. 👊

A huge thank you to Sensei Robin for bringing your students and sharing your knowledge, and to Sensei David for helping organise such a great evening. 🙏

We look forward to many more opportunities to train together! 🥋

Confidence starts with small victories. 🥋🐉

For our Little Dragons (ages 4–6), every class is about more than learning martial arts. It’s about building confidence through effort, trying new things, and celebrating progress.

Each new skill they learn, challenge they overcome, and goal they achieve helps them believe in themselves a little more.

Because confident kids grow into confident adults. 💪

What’s one quality you’d love your child to develop through martial arts? 👇

功夫 - Gōng Fu 🥋🔥

Most people think Gong Fu just means Chinese martial arts… but it’s more than that.

Gong Fu is any skill built through time, effort, and consistency.

The pianist 🎹 practising for hours.
The chef 👨‍🍳 refining their craft.

It’s the practice no one sees. 👊
It’s the discipline to keep showing up… even when it’s hard. 💯

It’s understanding that mastery takes time.
You can’t rush the process. 🐢

In the Wu Guan, it’s not just how you train—
it’s how you carry yourself every day.

Earned. Not given. 🔥
That’s Gong Fu. 🥋
