“How many minutes until we leave?” sounds like a normal morning question.

But for your child, it’s also a quiet maths workout.

They’re practising how to:
work with time,
count forwards or backwards,
subtract minutes,
plan what they can realistically do before leaving.

And honestly, this is where a lot of kids struggle — not because they “can’t do maths”, but because maths can feel disconnected from real life.

So instead of turning the morning rush into another lecture, try turning it into a quick thinking moment.

You might ask:
“We leave at 8:10. It’s 7:45 now. How long have we got?”

Then give them a few seconds to think before jumping in.

That little pause matters. It helps them build confidence, not just speed.

Helpful maths practice does not always need a desk, a worksheet, or a quiet room. Sometimes it happens while everyone is looking for shoes.
