Faro (Portugal) Millennium Team Cadet European Cup 2026 – 23-24May26

Both Abbey Cook and Kento Asano trained very well in Poland after their first Europeancompetition. For Portugal a week later, Kento moved down to 66kg as his weight the previous week was very light.

Abbey had a solid first match against Italy scoring Yuko in Osaekomi (hold-down) and maintained good pressure to close the match. Against France, she built momentum through the match scoring Yuko 1 minute into Golden Score with Osoto-Gari. In the Quarter Final against Brazil, Abbey lost by Yuko in Golden Score from Tomoe-Nage. The Italian girl went on to win Bronze and Abbey fought against Belgium in repechage. Coming from behind by Yuko for much of the match, Abbey grafted hard and grew stronger throughout the match building a 2 shido advantage. 10 seconds to full-time, she threw her opponent with Seoi-Nage scoring Waza-Ari and took the match. This matched her against another Italian girl where she conceded a Waza-Ari from Sode in the first minute. Abbey fought to the end but could not gain back the advantage. A fantastic effort winning 3 of 5 matches for 7th place in her first Europe tour.

Kento had a very fast win against his Portuguese opponent. At the 15 second mark, his opponent dropped for Seoi-Nage and Kento did a perfect Sumi-Gaeshi counter off the floor to score Ippon. His second match against Spain was hard-fought and Kento was very competitive. Going into Golden Score, Kento was 2 shidos down to 1. Gripping at that stage was savage and the referee ruled that both needed to be more positive and gave each a Shido which was a shame as it put Kento out of the match; however, Spain went on to win Bronze and Kento looked like he absolutely belonged at this level of event.

Congratulations to both Cadets. You should be very proud as we are, of how you conducted yourselves giving great performances on your first European tour. Congratulations also to Kerrye for doing such a great job with the Cadet team and to all the Cadets in the team who fought extremely well.
