A Viking ship was steered from the right-hand side of the stern.

The rudder sat on the right quarter, a broad oar lashed through a wooden boss with a twisted withy, and the steersman turned it with a short bar pushed across his body. Two of the Norwegian ship burials were dug up with the rudder still fixed on that side.

That put the deep blade on one side for good, and the rest of the work moved around it. Bringing the rudder side against a jetty risked breaking it, so a ship lay with her left rail to the boards and the cargo crossed there.

The Old English name for the other side settles the question on its own. Left was baecbord, the back board, the side sitting behind the steersman while he faced forward. Right was steorbord, the steering side, which is where starboard comes from. Larboard, and later port, are much younger words.

Do you know another everyday word that started life as a piece of ship's gear?
