Sharing the joy of Science during National Science Week 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

Last week we celebrated National Science Week. This year’s theme, 'Seeds of Science: nurturing science for all', provided a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity in our youngest scientists.

Secondary teachers Melissa Blacklock and Joshua McQuade, together with Laboratory Technician James Cutting, brought science to life for our primary students through a series of engaging and interactive science shows.

Across the different sessions, students explored scientific ideas through memorable demonstrations involving everyday observations, dry ice, a bed of nails, elephant toothpaste and more.

Each show was designed to encourage students to ask questions, make predictions and consider the science behind what they were seeing, planting the seeds of curiosity and excitement that we hope will continue to grow well beyond National Science Week.

Competing on the World Stage | Meet Renelda (SCG Class of 2027)

Sport has always been part of Renelda’s story.

Since joining Southern Cross Grammar as a Foundation student in 2015, Renelda has embraced every opportunity to get involved, compete, and grow — from House sporting activities in her early years to discovering her passion for soccer and futsal at eight-years-old.

In 2025, her sporting journey reached the international stage when she was selected to represent Australia in the Under 16 Girls Team at the V Sport Futsal Competition in Spain.

Happy Book Week! 📖🔖✨

Our Centauri Centre came alive today in a Symphony of Stories as students and staff dressed up as their favourite literary characters and shared in the joy of reading.

Following the Dress Up Parade our Year 12 students joined Foundation students for our much loved annual Teddy Bears Picnic in the Learning Resource Centre. Friendships were formed and stories shared as they connected over picture books.

Thank you to our librarian and literacy teams, and staff for bringing a world of wonder to life for our students.

Congratulations to Year 5 student Jonathan on being awarded first place in the 13th International Young Pianist competition by Steinway & Sons.

Jonathan competed in the Children’s Category earlier this month, where he performed 'Etude No II' by Moskowvski and 'Lento con gran espressione' by Chopin with internationally acclaimed pianist and chamber musician Dr Kenji Fujimura adjudicating the competition.

Dr Fujimura praised Jonathan’s articulation and accents in the right-hand chords, and since the competition has invited Jonathan to Japan to perform and compete with other young pianists.

Jonathan has been an active member of our Southern Cross Grammar music program since Year 1. He plays in Heron Choir, String Orchestra, and Year 5 Band, as well as performing in school assemblies and piano recitals.

Jonathan's achievements reflect his versatility as a young musician and his enthusiasm for contributing to the musical life of our school and beyond. We are proud of his achievement, musicianship, and dedication to his craft.

And that’s a wrap! Congratulations to our talented cast, crew, production team, and chorus on a stellar production of The Wizard of Oz.

Many hands and minds come together to bring a school production to life and the same can be said for our students and staff here at Southern Cross Grammar.

From our cast who spent months spent learning and perfecting lines at home, school, and on stage; to our older students who mentored our young performers, worked with City of Melton's Taylors Hill Men’s Shed to bring set pieces to life, and supported behind the scenes during the shows; to the many staff and parents who have supported the journey to date, thank you 💜💙🌟

A Future Without Limits | Meet Shiven (SCG Class of 2027).

Shiven joined Southern Cross Grammar in 2022 as a Year 7 student. Since then, he has embraced the breadth of opportunities available to him, nurturing his passion for STEM, his sports performance, his leadership, and his commitment to giving back.

Now in Year 11, Shiven is studying Chemistry, Mathematical Methods, Accounting, Specialist Mathematics, Applied Computing, and English: subjects that allow him to be creative while drawing on his analytical thinking skills.

“My love for STEM has always been there, but coming to Southern Cross Grammar gave me a lot more opportunities than I had seen before,” he said.

Highlights from his time at Southern Cross Grammar have included:
🧪 winning the Minor Bursary in the 2023 Science Talent Search for his research into nanobots for treating internal wounds without the risk of invasive surgery
🎓 representing the school in a leadership capacity locally and supporting young SCG athletes
🏅 being recognised for his academic, leadership, and community contributions through our Colours Program.

Shiven’s journey and achievements to date have been made possible by his teachers, who helped him see new possibilities in his learning.

Possibilities which have enabled him to soar.

“To me, soaring means going beyond what you originally thought your capabilities were and creating new ceilings for yourself.”

As he looks ahead to Year 12 and charts the course to a brighter future ahead, Shiven hopes to continue creating new ceilings for himself and a future that refuses to be confined.
